Tip For Tuesday: Utilizing Under Bed Storage

Happy Tuesday everyone!

You may see the pattern if you have followed me for a while: Each Tuesday is my Tip for Tuesday series,  where I offer some helpful and simple decorating tips to my readers, that will enhance and beautify their lives, and bring comfort into their homes.

This week’s simple tip is “Utilizing Under Bed Storage”.

For most of us, it is time to pack away the winter jackets and coats, and the fluffy sweaters that kept us warm during this very long, rough winter.

Or maybe you are losing the battle to clutter. It can happen so easily, and before long, clutter has taken over our homes and starts to affect our moods and the way we look at our homes.

I understand that It is not easy finding the space in an average closet or pantry, so we have to get creative with every inch of square footage in our homes. Simple solutions can work wonders for organizing our homes and make us fall in love with them all over again.

Underneath beds is the single most wasted space in a home. For the most part they are dust collectors and where you usually find items that you lost over two years ago.

Under bed storage of course is very functional, but there are great ways to make it stylish as well.

TIP: Incase your bed isn’t high enough underneath, you can add risers to the legs to raise it up at least 3″. Then hide all that unattractiveness with a nice tailored bed-skirt. Just avoid using bricks like I have seen in the past :-)

  1. We have a small house so I have to utilize underbed storage. We went to IKEA over the weekend and saw beds that have drawers under them. I want one!

  2. Great tips! I use a lot of plastic containers to store things under my bed. I also have a few of the zipper bags. It helps me stay organized and clutter free which is wonderful.

  3. Both of my kids have captains beds and it was the best decision ever for their rooms. My 8 year old son uses his to store all of his bulky sports jersey’s and sweaters, whereas my 5 year old daughter uses hers to store all of her Barbie dolls and accessories. I picked up cheap drawer organizers from the dollar store for the drawer that holds all the small pieces (shoes, brushes, purses, etc) and it works out perfect!

  4. Yes, I really need to optimize my storage. We live in a two bedroom one bath home and space is VERY limited when it comes to storage , it’s getting pretty hard to maintain the house because there is stuff EVERYWHERE :( Thanks for the post.

    • Thank you for taking the time to read and comment. Clutter can happen so quickly and before long takes over and affects our moods. Simple solutions like these are great for peace of mind

  5. We put risers under our bed’s legs and raised the bed up about 8 inches. A bed skirt hides the plastic (Martha Stewart available at Wal-Mart) risers. Not only do the risers make the bed easier to get in and out of, we now have room under the bed to store stuff in plastic bins.

  6. we utilize all the space under our bed but that’s not saying it organized. Our daughters bed has so much space under it but we don’t utilize it very well.

  7. I have a container under each bed that holds the sheets for that particular bed (we have 3 size beds. No space to house all the sheets in the hall closet!) It’s never an issue when I have to make the bed or change sheets when a guest is coming!

  8. We use plastic storage containers like you show, love them. I’ve never found drawers to be particularly useful for us, they became awkward to get to and pull out and push in, plus sometimes clothes caught on them and pulled.

  9. You have some great ideas. We have a couple of containers under our bed and they really are a convenient way to keep up with the storage shortage in our bedroom.

  10. These are great tips. I love the beds as well but the best part is being able to store things underneath. In India our bed had flaps that lifted up so you had to move the mattress to get to them. It was like a more secure form of under bed storage. I miss those!

  11. That sliding base tray is amazing – I really need to get something like that or some boxes on wheels for under my bed at the moment it’s just a mess of cardboard boxes. x

  12. If you were to look under my bed you would find a ton of my kids toys. It seems like their personal hiding spots. I could definitely use some storage underneath my bed instead of the kids toys.

  13. Awesome post as always! Can you believe I am dealing with clutter three years after losing everything we had in a fire! I think part of the problem is that I couldn’t say no to all the kind people giving us things and then I had trouble letting things go! Declutter must happen stat around here!

  14. When I was younger, I had a custom-designed/built bed that had built-in drawers. When I moved to California, I got rid of it and since have had a traditional bed with wasted space underneath. Love these ideas.
