Tip For Tuesday: Painting Lampshades

I have seen time and time again, clients who have a storage full of old lamps that they don’t use anymore for one reason or another. If you are one of those people, you might want to take a second look at those lamps before putting them out on the curb on trash day.

You can change the look of old lamp by spray painting it. But did you know that you could even spray paint the shades? You sure can! You can go further by adding embellishments too.

Check out a recent blog post where I spray painted some old lamps that I had in storage. Click here

And incase you are curious about how to spray paint the lampshades, here is a video showing just how simple it is.

Now wasn’t that easy?

Painting your lampshades isn’t restricted to just a solid color. This is a great opportunity to do something fun and unexpected.

Here are a few examples of beautifully painted lampshades with patterns and designs

Aren’t’ they all beautiful? They are certainly works of art!

If you are not comfortable with free-handing a design on a lampshade, try using a stencil. Stencils are available at any craft store like Michael’s or Hobby Lobby. If you would rather not use a stencil, you can try something like a simple monogram, stripes, or color blocking……or even chalkboard paint! How creative is that!

You can get as creative as you like – Using watercolors to create an abstract design in the colors of the room would look amazing!

Painting lampshades is a great way to decorate for the seasons. You can pick up paper lampshades inexpensively at any craft store and paint one for each season. Maybe a pastel color with birds and flowers for spring, autumn leaves for fall etc.

What are your thoughts on painting lampshades?

I hope you are inspired to create something beautiful today!

Be Inspired!

  1. A really cool lampshade can make a great statement. My grandma was a big yarn gal (crochet, macrame, knitting), and on a whim she made a lampshade by just wrapping yarn vertically. Everyone loved that lamp. Fun stuff!

  2. What a brilliant idea! I never thought of painting my own lampshade, but what a great idea because it would give it just the right amount of personalization that it needs!

    • You raise a good point Valerie. As long as you use the proper wattage bulb for the lamp as recommended by the maker, a regular satin finish paint will be fine. If you are worried about it then you can use paint that resists heat – similar to what is used for a fireplace surround

  3. I always go to thrift stores just to find the things like this that can easily be re-done for our home. It saves money and gives me a creative project to work on. I love some of the patterns here.

  4. You got to probably artistic to pull it off – if I try that myself – it’ll be a disaster haha but those are so cute! Very artistic!

  5. What a fantastic idea! I love this and you could do so many different things for different rooms. I am not creative but I would like to give this a try

  6. I had no idea you could paint lampshades! Those are all so gorgeous! What an easy way to update a boring lamp!

  7. No way! what a great idea to paint lampshades! and seriously, I think I need to make more money so that I can have you come and redo my house! I love this blog!

  8. Duh! I never even thought about painting a lampshade! We looked high and low for some that would match our decor and it took forever to find some that we liked. I wish I would have just painted some and saved myself a lot of time!

  9. Wow… I’ve never ever thought about painting a lampshade and it’s such a simple and easy way to bring new life to an old feature. Brilliant! Your blog is awesome for ideas! Thank you. :-)
