I sometimes get resistance when I mention pillows to certain clients, especially my male clients. But any designer will tell you that adding pillows to a sofa, chair or a bed helps to pull a room together.
Pillows in a variety of sizes, colors and textures add a finishing touch to a room and helps to ground your color scheme. Plus it’s a great way to show your personality!
One pair of pillow tends to look a bit sparse, so try at least three pillows arranged like this:
It is important to have various patterns and textures for a more dynamic look. The art of mixing patterns is key here. Pay attention to the scale of each fabric pattern. Varying the scale of the patterns is more pleasing to the eye. Try mixing a large scale floral, with a stripe, a mini print or geometric and a solid. Be sure to repeat colors for consistency.
Don’t go overboard with too many pillows. Go for “inviting” and not “stay off the sofa”. You want guests to your home……and occupants to want to sit and be comfortable, so keep it simple.
Of course this doesn’t just apply to sofas, but to beds as well….even a twin size bed for a toddler
And of course the big mystery of where to put the pillows at night, isn’t a mystery after all…..the bench at the foot of the bed, the seating area or the floor. That seems to be the big resistance I get with adding pillows to a bed

Another nice decoration tips! I love your tips always, keep it up!
I love Pillows i keep saying to hubby that i want a corner in the house full of pillows i can lay on and so my work lol.
I have some pillows on my sofa and loveseat, but I don’t love the cluttered look, so I won’t have more than two on each.
While I have a couple of pillows on my couch I find that in order to sit comfortably on the coach both guests and I have to put them on top of the back of the coach. I agree pillows can pull a room together(I do have a couple) but I for one put comfort first.
Very neat and beautiful, pillows adds styles and the color scheme of it makes more vibrant.
Pillows can make or break a look. My MIL got me two big pillows for the couch (we had one smaller one). They match perfectly, but they’re too large and make me think the room is out of order when I pass by. I may move them, but I hope I remember to put them back in there when she comes to visit, lolol
And where do you put all those pillows when you to bed?
I knew I would get some resistance male from some of my male readers, so I address it in the post. You must have missed it
I LOVE pillows. My bed has like 8 pillows on it. Not even joking.
I LOVE Pillows. . . .it’s an easy way to change up the decor. (they’re all over the floor when I go to bed, but you just have to make sure you put them out of the way so you don’t trip.)
I never realized how much pillows can make a room pop. Great tip, thank you
I really love all those pillows! Seems that I should que couple of them for my sofa too. We don’t have any at the moment.
My wife loves pillows and has them on all the couches and beds. They really do add to the decor of each room.
Speaking of pillows. I really am in need of some new ones for my furniture. What a great way to brighten up any room.
I am a huge fan of pillows! I love them for couches and beds. They can get annoying on a bed when you have to put them on and then take them off, but they definitely make a huge difference and give the room a lot of flare.
I love pillows! We have them in our den and living room on all the couches and chairs! And a few too many on our bed!
I totally agree, using pillows, helps tie the room together. I always use pillows on my sofa, bed, and chairs.
I seriously love the collection of pillows you put together! I want to use pillows more, but never knew how to mix them well to be pleasing to the eye. This is brilliant.
Before I had my 2 furry girls I had more pillows. Now they’re just strategically placed…. the pillows, that is!
I need you to come decorate my apartment. you have lovely ideas.
Oh, I’m so inspired to add tons and tons of pillows now. I used to have some but they got tired so I threw them out. I need to freshen up with some new!
I have always been in the anti-pillow camp, although your pictures prove their worth in design!
I like using pillows to decorate because when I get bored I can switch up the pillows for a low-cost room revamp.
i love pillows i think they give a home character and make them feel lived in plus it’s nice to have something to snuggle up on
Your rooms and pillow choices are great. FYI…they are much easier to maintain this way when the kids go off to college:)
Love this. I especially love the look of a solid white or light colored couch or whatever with multi-colored pills. There cannot be too many pillows! Business people are often told to get out of their comfort zone and I often reply that comfort is over-rated, anyway. Well, that’s business. When it comes to settling down at home, comfy pillows are a huge plus!
Absolutely Barbara! Lounging on a sofa with comfy pillows are a great way to finish off a hectic day
Thanks all for your great comments!
I love pillows and I plan on piling them on my new couch when I redo my living room this year. I love the fabric on the pillows in your photos.
i especially love the last picture–you’re right storing pillows is not a problem, although a bench is ideal!
I adore pillows and cushions I really think they are a lovely touch to any room. x
I am obsessed with pillows. LOVE them. They really add so much to a room.
Lovin’ all those pillow choices! I am one of those resistant to more pillows on the bed, haha
Love throw pillows! Wish I had some beautiful ones like those in the pictures!
I love those colorful pillows! i hope my place can provide those kinds of pillows
I have noticed that decor is starting to lighten up. I’ve always liked it that way. You have great taste.
I would love to lighten my room. I love how bright these looks are.
I love pillows! I love piling them on my couch and bed.
It’s amazing how something as simple and inexpensive as pillows can completely change a room. I love the third picture, so much fun!
