Mirrors got a very bad rap when folks would add wall to wall mirrors back in the 70′s and 80′s.
But mirrors are still a great design trick for creating the illusion of a larger space especially in a small room.
Mirrors add an instant sparkle and depth in a room. What’s great is that it reflects light and enhances a beautiful vignette or feature that it is reflecting
Now here’s an example of how to properly do a mirror in a room
- Add a floor length mirror wherever possible, especially in a bedroom
- Use a framed or beveled mirror
- Use mirrored furniture, but sparingly
- Hang a wall mirror at the proper height
- Make sure the mirror is reflecting something pretty
- A wall of mirrors is great if it is done in an artful way
Now go forth and decorate with mirrors without fear. If you need inspiration, click here to view a cool post I wrote a while ago featuring some gorgeous mirrors.
Hope all is well in your world, and best wishes for a great Tuesday!

Come to think of it, I don’t have mirrors anywhere but the bathrooms in my house. I like the look of them, but I have so many of my kids drawings hanging up, I don’t have much wall space left.
I grew up in a row home and we always had mirrors. I used to think they were a pain but I can see not that they gave the appearance of more space. I need to get more mirrors. I like the illusion.
The only mirrors in our house is the bathrooms and my dresser, I have seen people decorate with mirrors and it looks great, just have not tried it myself
we have mirrors going up our stairs, and yes it gives the illusion of a bigger space, but i would like them down.. the look is not ours..

I have always loved mirrors for decorating. I know that feng shui has some opinions about the use of mirrors. In fact, I used to have mirrors on the wall over my stove, to multiply the abundance at that part of the home.
I love decorating with mirrors! And my two year old gets a kick out of seeing his facial expressions and watching himself in the mirror! We have mirrors all throughout our house!
My husband wants to put a big mirror in our library. I’m cautious. Your post makes me a little less cautious.. we’ll see.
Thanks for the write up!
The only mirror in my house is the bathroom mirror. I never thought to decorate with mirrors, but I am definitely considering it now.
I have seen some really nice things done with mirrors. Great mirror pictures showing different ways to use them.
I think a lot of us are afraid of what we’ll see in the mirror.. I’m not afraid to see myself but maybe an aborition or something!
I have one floor length mirror by the door, I would add a mirror in my bedroom ob the wall but I need those hooks you put on the wall that don’t leave holes in the wall.
I know there are few places in my house in which mirrors can make a difference. Thanks for the information.
I like the look of the mismatched mirrors on the wall. It definitely brightens up the room and makes it seem larger.
What a fantastic idea to display them on the doors with a beveled edge!
I love decorating with mirrors. I have been going to flea markets collecting them, so I can showcase them on a wall…hopefully soon!
I agree mirrors make difference especially in a small rooms..Nice idea of you.
Our dining room has mirror decorations ad I really like it. Thank you for sharing this it gives me an idea to rearrange them.
I have heard of mirrors making the room look bigger. I don’t need mine to look bigger but I will rethink using them to decorate the room.
I usually use mirrors whenever I can to make our house look bigger.
I really like how you have the mirrors displayed on the ledges. Nice job!
Awesome!! I am planning to move on a small apartment, this actually helps by adding mirror to make it like a huge room.. thank you so much!!
I don’t really like mirrors in the house other than closet or in the bedroom.
To me they are cold and every time I look at them i see something ugly
My grandma use to have mirrors every where around the house, & yes I really like mirrors I also like the second pic that you have
I love that wall with all the mirrors, the entire set up would be perfect for the house we are looking at buying. I used to use mirrors a lot in my last home to brighten things up and make it look bigger.
Thanks for all your great comments and for all the votes for Top Mommy Blogs
I am not a big fan of the mirror. I just am not. They are hard to keep clean and free of fingerprints and after time when the sun shines on them they always have some type of streaks. My mom, however loves mirrors and I remember having them all of the house growing up. I also remember cleaning them.
I have always loved mirrors because they really open up a room and make small spaces look larger. Plus, I love looking in the mirror so I would be able to kill two birds with one stone.
I love mirrors! They are a great addition in any room
I love mirrors however I have no idea how to decorate with them so I found this very useful. I bookmarked so I can come back and reference after I buy lots of mirrors. I liked the picture with the multiple mirrors hanging.
Thanks for the tips! I would love to incorporate mirrors into my new home decor

I love mirrors! I have a set of mirrors that is made out of an old timey windows.
I actaully don’t like mirrors in rooms other than the bathroom. My parents house had an entire wall that was a mirror, even the back of a door. It’s turned me off of them for life I think.
I’m going to remember your tip about making sure it reflects something pretty. I appreciate that!
Thank you Liz! I am glad you found some inspiration from my post
I can’t imagine living without mirrors all around me. How could I dress in the morning! But really, they are great at adding some light and extending the “length” of a room. Thanks for your awesome design insights, as usual!
That is true. I cannot imagine getting dressed without a full length mirror
Not going to lie, I’ve always been a bit terrified to work with mirrors in our home, for risk of them looking cheesy. Maybe I should suck it up and give mirrors a go.
Start small Lori and see how you feel. The use of mirrors have been abused somewhat, so that may be why you are afraid. But there are ways to make them enhance a room and look fabulous
