Mirrors are a great addition in a well designed room. They bring light and add depth in a space. Mirrors can be a decorator’s best friend in a small room that doesn’t get much natural light. Among the many benefits of mirrors, they make great focal points, reflect and emphasize views and colors from art pieces and create special effects in a room.
Here are some do’s and don’ts of decorating with mirrors:
- The location of the mirror is very critical to a successful room design. A mirror should never be placed in a way that it reflects undesirable views.
- You can absolutely hang multiple mirrors on one wall. They need to be grouped in a visually pleasing way keeping scale, balance and proportion in mind
- Never hang a mirror that is too small on a large wall
- Although it seems to be a very common thing, a mirror above a fireplace mantle is usually too high to be functional and really only reflects the ceiling
- Choose mirrors with great frames that will complement your décor. This is a great way to add personality.
- Add a mirror in an entry to reflect light. They also create a great opportunity to check yourself on your way out the door
- Add a mirror in a dining room with candlelight to create a warm, romantic glow
- Avoid doing a wall of frameless mirrors or mirrors on the ceiling….especially in a bedroom.

Very beautiful and elegant! I love the style of the mirrors!
Wow, for some reason those porthole mirrors sing to me! Love them!!! and just my opinion, mirrors should always be clean
though mine are not
Mirrors can also make a small space look bigger if used correctly.

I love the lotus and clover mirrors!
the port hole works for me! We have a nice large mirror that helps make the room bigger.
I really like the grouping of leaves. I had not thought to use a mirror at an entry. Good idea to check yourself before leaving. The only mirror I have is my bedroom dresser mirror.
Frames around the mirror can be extremely tacky
I like plain mirror with beveled edges and black wrote iron
Beautiful – once again!
So many beautiful mirrors!!! Who would have that they come in all shapes and sizes
Gorgeous – I love a nice mirror.
I happened into a beautiful lighting store, just for fun, a few years ago, and left with a beautiful mirror. It was perfect in the entry way into my home. Then I sold the home! So, what to do with the mirror? It’s in my dining room and yes, it’s a great focal point! Love what you say about mirrors!
Some of the design items are amazing!!!! LOVE it!!!
Mirrors are always a great addition. Nice article and images too here!
I really enjoyed reading your article. Great mirrors too!
Haven’t been a big fan of mirrors but your porthole mirror pic caught my eye. Your hints make sense.. Funny how a mirror could reflect a messy area ( or cluttered area ) that you might not notice when you hang it !
Excellent information. Now I’ll be able to select a great mirror!
I didn’t know that Veronica! Thanks for sharing!
Wow the mirrors are so lovely!
I also place mirrors according to feng shui laws for prosperity and health. I have a gigantic mirror in my front hall for both bright light and to allow for proper chi in my home… I think my plants like it the most!
The gold starburst for me. I love mirrors and have several groupings around my house. But I also have one really large mirror and everyone comments on how much they love it.
I love the tips on mirror placement, I have a couple that need adjustment
You guys are all so very awesome!! Thanks so much for your great comments!
Wow! Some of those are works of art.
A mirror can change a boring space into a spectacular space!
I really like the grouping of the port hole mirrors. Especially in the dining area. It would never occur to me to do that.
It’s hard for me to decide – I like so many of them. I guess I will pick the necklace one, but now I need to think of a place for it!
