Take Care Of Yourself So You Can Take Care Of Business

Recently I have been on a bit of a health kick and loving it. With all the information on the internet, especially showing up on my Facebook newsfeed, I could no longer ignore the importance of self-preservation.

self_care_tips_women_entrepreneurs

If you are like me, running a business and a household solo, you know what it is like to have a lot on your plate. Life can get crazy!! In fact, if things aren’t crazy in my life, I get bored. I really have not taken the time to take care of myself so that I can take care of business. I got away from exercising and eating healthy and began to drink coffee everyday which I have never done in all my years. I was beginning to feel really burnt out and tired all the time, so I decided to take my well being back from the norm of society.

So here’s what I have been doing for the past two weeks to get myself back on the path to being the best I can be

Self-Care_2

  1. I started exercising again! – A little bit at a time, but I have so much more energy now.
  2. Eating way better! – For the past two weeks my diet consists of juicing fruits and vegetables, raw and organic foods, one cooked meal a day (salmon and hard boiled eggs only), a lot more water and coconut water, no eating past 8:00pm
  3. More time with the kids – I am listening a lot more because I have taken away the distraction of working at all hours of the night
  4. Planning a weekend get-away with my friend Aimee – She has invited me several times to her hometown of New Orleans and I jut couldn’t find the time. I finally have and it will be fun!
  5. Really qualifying prospects and valuing my time - I used to feel really guilty if a prospect called and I had to turn them down due to distance or unrealistic budget or knowing right away they wouldn’t be the right fit. I would spend countless hours driving to their homes (at no charge) and even giving them design tips and ideas (no charge) and sometimes even working on a preliminary plan without knowing for sure what the budget is or even if they are serious. I really didn’t want to be labeled as a snobby decorator, because unfortunately we already have that reputation. But I have now learned that saying no is not a terrible thing if it is the right answer. Sure I enjoy giving tips and ideas to people, and I will continue to do so through by Facebook pages (Casa Vilora Interiors and No Naked Windows), my websites (Casa Vilora Interiors and No Naked Windows), and my blog (The Naked Decorator).
  6. Prayer and meditation time – This one is the ultimate self-care for me. I sometimes let life get in the way and don’t spend enough time in prayer meditation and reading my Bible. I need wisdom, strength and mercy for each day, so why am I not tapping into the proven Source?
  7. Stress less – There are so many things I worry about everyday: My business growing, my kids, what people say about me, and most things out of my control. I have decided to worry less, especially about things that I cannot control.
Sometimes "NO" is the right answer

Sometimes “NO” is the right answer

Here’s what I have been eating lately. I am just starting out, but I think it is a good start for someone who loved junk food!

I make this salad for dinner every night. I sometimes switch the eggs out for salmon

My results so far? I have a lot more energy, I have lost weight (Not sure how much as I never weigh myself) and I am in a better mood these days and socializing a bit more. In fact, I may be going out on a date soon :-) :-) It may be bloggable, so stay tuned :-)

Custom Drapery Panels On A Budget Using Burlap

Custom drapery panels are one of the least expensive, yet beautiful options to dress up a naked window. Drapery panels can be functional, which means that they are made to close completely for privacy and protection from the sun, or they can be non-functional. This means they are decorative fixed panels that are not meant to close to cover the window. If privacy is desired, a window treatment such as blinds, shutters, roller shades, honeycomb shades etc, usually acts as the first layer or privacy layer, with the non-functional drapery panels as the second layer adding softness, color and style.

Depending on fabric choice, window size and hardware chosen, drapery panels can range anywhere from $1500 to several thousand dollars not including installation! But with my custom drapery panels available on my online store, you can get the same great quality for a lot less!

My custom BURLAP drapery panels start at only $269.00 per pair!! This includes your choice of color from twenty different options, your choice of lining (sateen or blackout), or you can choose unlined or even add interlining. You also get to choose the header or pleat type (grommets, French pleat, pinch pleat, cartridge pleat) and of course the finished length desired. There is also the option for color-blocked panels, which means that you can use up to three different colors per panel. Here are examples of burlap panels from my design studio display (The two drapery panels on the right)

Studio Time: Fabric Sample Collection

It has been a crazy few weeks for me with the move, and I am finally back in the studio full time this week. Trying to play catch-up is a bit overwhelming, but I am getting it done, little by little :-)

Of course being back means that I get to go through the new shipment of fabric sample books that arrived during my absence. For those who don’t know, I’m a bit of a fabric connoisseur (If I do say so myself :-) ). It is my absolutely favorite part of my work as an Interior Decorator. In fact, I have decided to give you all a brief “behind the scene” look at my vast fabric sample collection.

My design studio located in the heart of Houston’s beautiful Museum District is still a work in progress, so you will get to see pictures of the entire studio in the near future, but for now, here is a rare glimpse of where the magic happens :-)

new arrivalsThese are new arrivals from Norbar Fabrics

fabric 6One wall of trim books!

fabric 4fabric 5These are hanging samples or my loose samples that are not booked.

Believe it or not, there are lots more that are not shown, but you get the idea :-)

I love having a large selection for my clients, and I am always seeking out new and exciting sources. This allows me to give each client a unique, custom design that they will love for many many years! There is something for everyone here. From time to time I cannot find just the right fabric I have in mind, so I visit the Decorative Center Houston, where most of my favorite fabric houses have a showroom: Kravet, Duralee, Fabricut, Pindler & Pindler and Schumacher…..It’s like a kid in a candy store when I visit! One of my future goals is developing my own line of fabrics, that way, I will always have exactly what I have in mind! :-)

I want to give my clients the same experience of a kid in a candy store when they visit my design studio: A welcoming, comfortable and inspired feeling, where there are lots of choices to suit their taste, lifestyle and budget……and they leave happy and satisfied!

You are welcomed to visit Casa Vilora Interiors design studio anytime! Please contact me if you are interested in finding out more about my design services or scheduling an appointment.

Don’t forget to comment and share! :-)

Have an awesome Tuesday!

Home Sweet Home

This picture was taken during construction, and is not the most recent

This picture was taken during construction, and is not the most recent

Finally after a long roller coaster ride that seemed to have gone on forever, I am the proud new owner of my much smaller cozier home close to the country! Gone is the “mansion” to a new family of six, who I’m sure will better use all 4300 square feet of it. I got a phone call from the new owner today, and she is really excited about her new home. I know they will be happy there, just as we have been for the last 8 years!

It was definitely mixed emotions signing on the dotted lines (many dotted lines) at the closing of escrow on the sale of the old house. A part of me was really sad to let go, but for the most part I was really excited to get on with the next phase of our lives. My children are little troopers; they have adjusted very well to the move, and are actually looking forward to making friends in the new neighborhood. One thing is for sure, my daughter will have tons of babysitting jobs – The place is crawling with young families! :-)

There is an active neighborhood association and lots of fun activities amongst neighbors, so I am looking forward to making new friends…..and who knows, maybe a special friend? ;-) I’ll be sure to keep you up-to-date on any happenings in that area :-)

Most of all, I am looking forward to picking out paint colors, fabrics, furniture and designing great new window treatments, and I promise to take you all along for the ride. But first, I am taking a long break from everything home related and focus on business development, and summer fun with the kids…..Maybe even a summer vacation!

No new pictures to show you….I am waiting until the decorating begins. It will be worth the wait, I promise :-)

In the meantime, here’s the front door I picked out…well close enough. The one I decided on has a reeded glass insert in the top half.

mhJK1alHnkC6yntLJECjkQwThat’s all I have for today….I have a lot of unpacking to do. Wish you all were here to help :-)

In the meantime, please contact me if you need help with your décor and window treatments.

Eclectic Room Inspiration

Are you considering a room redo? Maybe you are struggling with the direction you want to go as far as the style and feel of the room? One way to overcome this design style block, is to call in a design professional. A good designer knows what questions to ask to help you uncover your design style and aesthetic, and of course take care of all the planning and implementation of your new space. But if you’d rather take the DIY approach, the next best thing is to browse design blogs and websites, and shelter magazines for style ideas. It may be quite possible that you already own some of the pieces you need to create a brand new room makeover, and it may be a great adventure shopping flea markets, estate sales, and auctions.

By going with an eclectic look you have the ability to mix and match pieces from different design periods and design styles and still achieve a very well thought out, cohesive and beautiful result. Imagination goes a long way when creating an eclectic space that seemed to have evolved over time. It does require a steady hand and some editing and restraint. Eclectic can easily head in the direction of “cluttered” if not carefully done. The key to achieving that cohesive, pulled-together look is by observing certain principles of design

  • Scale – Basically, this refers to size, or grandness of the main pieces in the room. They should all have similar scale.
  • Balance – Refers to how these pieces relate to each other. Balance should be a prime consideration when combining disparate items
  • Color – Don’t go for pieces that are all red or all blue or all yellow, but instead, look for similar color schemes, a common color that runs through each style, or simply a common “temperature” — for instance, red and orange are warm, while blue and purple are cool.

The room shown below is an eclectic space with some ethnic or global influences, that is very relaxing. Take a look at the 6 tips that you can take away to inspire your own eclectic room makeover.

While my blog contest is still in effect, I promised to post the article with the details of the contest each day until Monday, June 3rd when I announce the winner. But me and my OCD, I couldn’t bring myself to posting the same article three days in a row :-), not that there’s anything wrong with doing that :-)

I still want to give everyone a good chance to win the fabulous prize for naming the new mascot for “No Naked Windows”, so I decided to add the link to the blog contest in my post for today. Feel free to hop on over there and participate. You could be the lucky winner! :-)

I will provide the answer to the question in my blog post for the following day.

I promise I will never make it too difficult to guess :-)

Ok, here’s our product for today. Can you guess what the heck it is? and what is it used for?

  1.  Bring the outdoors in and the indoors out. – Add some colorful throw pillows to your patio furniture using indoor/outdoor fabrics. Add an outdoor area rug to define the seating area. Add a dining area for al fresco summer dining.
  2. Switch out your coffee table or end tables with some colorful garden stools. Overstock.com has a great selection.
  3. Decorate with fresh flowers. You may even switch out your typical flower vases to colorful lemonade pitchers for a bit of whimsy. Pier1.com has a great selection.
  4. Wallpaper the back of a bookcase or a closet in a fun or colorful pattern. MuralsYourWay.com has a great selection of removable and re-usable wallpaper
  5. Organize and store in pretty containers. Add some floating shelves to a dead wall space or add colorful containers in the kitchen to store cookies and such. ContainerStore.com has tons of solutions for storage.
  6. Add decorative throw pillows indoors in fun and trendy colors and patterns for some pizzazz. My online store has a great selection

Name The New Mascot For “No Naked Windows” :-)

I need to ask a favor of you guys (well it’s more like playing another silly game :-)), but before I do, let me explain about the cute little guy you are looking at below………

Photo: Secret Garden FaceBook Page

Photo: Secret Garden FaceBook Page

Not too long ago, I came across this photo on a Facebook page I follow called Secret Garden, of this cute little turtle looking longingly out of a window. I don’t quite know why, because I am not a big fan of reptiles, but I fell in love with the little guy. (Isn’t he cute? :-)) In a way, he reminds me of my Chiweenie, Rufus! I shared him on my Facebook Page and apparently I’m not the only one who feels this way :-) He just seems to have a personality and apparently some self awareness.

I decided to use the little guy as the mascot for my next window treatment promotion that I am running for the summer. Kinda makes sense since he is looking out of a naked window :-) right?

This is the text that will caption this cute little picture:

“Have your naked windows left you sad and blue? Then race on over to Casa Vilora Interiors and No Naked Windows and take advantage of our summer sale! Up to 20% off all window treatments including custom drapery, blinds, shutters and energy saving options too! Sale starts on June 1 and runs the entire summer! You guessed it, I need your help figuring  out what to name this little guy….or girl! (Equal opportunity here :-)) He is much too cute to go nameless….don’t you think? :-)

I’ll tell you what the fabulous prize is in just a second, but in order to win, you MUST like my two Facebook pages No Naked Windows and Casa Vilora Interiors if you haven’t already done so, and you MUST share this blog post. How To Hang Drapery Panels

Purchasing and hanging drapery panels can be very overwhelming. There are a lot of little details that need to be considered, which we will talk about briefly in just a second. Most big box stores that offer curtain panels usually have them stocked at 84″ lengths or shorter, and if you are lucky, you may be able to order from their online stores up to 95″ lengths. But what if you have taller windows?

I have seen this happen so often on my in-home consultations. People usually move into a new home and are anxious to cover their windows whether for privacy or decorative reasons, so they run out to the big box store down the street to find an inexpensive solution. But is it really a solution if it is not addressing the problem? Store bought curtain panels rarely fit the windows properly. As I mentioned earlier, they are usually too short,  not many choices available, usually unlined or inadequately lined, and little or no consideration given to aesthetic and your energy savings needs. As I always say, you are going to spend the money anyway, why not spend it right. Custom drapery panels are made to fit your windows, and are a beautiful and timeless solution when done right.

Here at No Naked Windows, we have made it easy to order custom drapery panels through our online store. You get to choose your fabric type (silk, faux silk, linen, cotton, burlap etc), your choice of solid or patterned fabric, your choice of header (the pleating at the top of the drapery panels), the finished length, type of lining, or even the choice of using two or three different fabrics for a color blocking effect. Visit our online store to see your options. They start at just $269 per pair!

Once you have determined that custom drapery panels are the way to go, you now need to know how to measure for them and how to hang them, which directly impacts the finished length to order. Measuring is simple – just measure from the floor to your desired height

Some additional tips for measuring:

The finished length is the actual length of the finished panels. To measure for the finished length of your custom drapery panels, simply measure from the floor to the desired height from where you want the panels to hang. A good rule of thumb is: If the space above your window is 8″ or less, it is usually more aesthetically pleasing to hang your drapery panels right at the ceiling. If the height is more than 8″ then you can determine how high above the window you would like to hang the panels. Please note if you have low ceilings hanging the panels closer to the ceiling gives the illusion of more height. One more thing to keep in mind is the hardware you will be using to hang your panels. The hardware will add approximately 1″-2″ to the overall length when hung. If you desire some puddling in your drapery panels, you can add 2-3″ for a trouser break look or 6-8″ for a formal puddled look.

Here are a few illustrations of the Do’s and Don’ts of how to hang drapery panels

how to hang drapery panels

In this example there are  few don’ts:

  • Don’t hang the drapery panels right above the window. Hang drapery panels closer to the ceiling or crown molding to give he illusion of a higher ceiling
  • Don’t hang drapery panels so far above the floor. The minimum floor break is 1″. otherwise your drapery panels will look like high water pants
  • Don’t hang your drapery panels so far into the window. Hanging drapery panels starting at the edge of the window outward, helps to visually widen the window. Be careful that the edges of the window aren’t visible. Drapery panels should cover about 3-4″ of the window edges on either side. This applies to decorative drapery panels. If privacy is desired with your drapery panels, then you will need much more fabric for fullness, and room on either side of the window for stack-back ( The stacking back of the fabric when the drapery panels are in open position)

ILLUSTRATION B

In this example, at least the drapery panels are touching the floor, but notice that they are still hung too close to the top of the window and the drapery panels are too far inside the window.

ILLUSTRATION C

In this example, it’s finally done right:

  • The drapery panels are at a 1″ floor break
  • The drapery panels are hung closer to the ceiling
  • The drapery panels are hung at the window’s edges and outwards

I get this question a lot: What if I have double windows with drywall or trim in between both windows? Here’s the answer:

ILLUSTRATION D

1813_553453858020937_2090014473_n

I recommend ordering a third drapery panel to cover the drywall between the two windows….especially if over 6″ wide. This helps the overall window treatment to flow better and look like one unit and be more cohesive. If you have beautiful wood trim casings around your windows that you wish to show off, then no need for the third panel, as long as there isn’t more than about 18″ between the two windows with casing included, in which case you may need to treat them as two separate windows with two drapery panels each.

Here’s an example of drapery panels I designed and had installed for my client about two years ago. Notice that there wasn’t a lot of room above the window, so we took it all the way to the crown molding.

463358_378092702223721_110730298959964_1227720_1284562932_o

A couple more examples:

579086_631355073547965_65530747_n cropped

These are actually drapery panels with handkerchief swags. I included this picture to illustrate what happens when we are working with a bay window. You still want the windows to be one unit and have a cohesive flow. Here we used three different rods, but added a special hardware called an “elbow” to join them together at each 45 degree angle. The elbow is quite flexible and works much like our elbows do. The drapery panels are then installed to wrap around the angles for a better flow and cleaner look.

So today you’ve learned how to measure your windows, where to order your custom drapery panels, and how to hang them. We will be running our summer special on custom drapery panels and all other window treatments starting June 1st through the entire summer – up to 20% off! You can use coupon code SUMMER20 at checkout beginning June1. If you are in the Houston area, lucky you! We can install your custom drapery panels for you at an additional charge, and even order your hardware for you! :-)

The first picture above is what my front yard looks like as we speak. The containers have been delivered and ready to be loaded with all my worldly possessions. It is going to take several hours to get it done, but I know it will be done right.

Ok so without further ado, here goes the game.

Look closely at the first picture above and tell me “What’s Wrong With This Picture?”

If you correctly guess what’s wrong with this picture by leaving a comment below, you could win a fabulous prize! :-)

What is the fabulous prize you ask? You’re in for a treat! :-)

But first, there is one more thing you must do before you can win the fabulous prize. You must like both my Facebook pages if you haven’t already done so. Here’s my About.Me profile containing all my contact information and social plugins. From there you can also follow me on Twitter, Pinterest, Google+ and other social media sites (Although not a requirement to win the fabulous prize). Click here to like my No Naked Windows and Casa Vilora Interiors pages.

Ok, back to the fabulous prize!!! Drum Roll please……….. :-)

It is this wonderful pair of 18×18 pillows from Surya.

Before I bid you adieu for today, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful and brave men and women who so selflessly serve our great nation. We honor and respect the sacrifice you make everyday to protect our freedom. We will always remember the ultimate sacrifice of the fallen.

Please don’t forget to comment and share so others can join in the fun too! :-)

Have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend!
