Monochromatic or Mucho Color

Do you like a calm monochromatic color scheme in your home or one full of vibrant color?

I personally love color, but I’ve found myself lately moving towards a more monochromatic color scheme in my personal decorating choices.

Which one is more your taste?

Tips for working with a Monochromatic color scheme in your home

  • Use various shades and tints of the same color
  • Avoid mixing cool and warm. Keep the colors in the same color family
  • Add subtle pattern and lots of texture to add interest and a good balance
  • Maximize lighting
  • Mix slick, shiny surfaces with rustic surfaces for maximum impact

Here’s a monochromatic room I recently completed

Tips for working with color in your home

  • Keep the backgrounds like wall color and larger upholstery pieces neutral and add color in accessories
  • Spread color around the room for balance. The 60,30,10 rule is a good place to start: 60% of a dominant color (example - wall color), 30% of a secondary color (example - upholstery) and 10% of an accent color (example - accents or floral arrangement)
  • Add a touch of black (example – in picture frames, or a lampshade)
  • Keep color value (color lightness or darkness) in mind for balance. Darker values work best on the floor which helps to anchor the room.
  • Use a fabric or rug from the room as inspiration for your color choices
  • Make sure colors flow from one room to the next.
  • Look to nature for color clues
  • Remember color affects your mood, so choose carefully
  • Live with color before committing if it scares you – ask for samples and view at different times of the day….especially for wall color.

Here’s one of the more colorful rooms I’ve done recently.

My Winter Survival Kit

The most magical month of the year is here! The really cold weather is here to stay in Houston. I grew up in Jamaica, where it’s warm all year, moved to South Forida, where it’s warm all year, and then moved to Houston, where it’s supposed to be warm all year! You see a pattern here? I am a warm weather girl!

Each year, like a bear, I go into hibernation. Well not literally, but I stay away from alot of outdoor activities and stay indoors where it’s warm and toasty. There are a few things I love to have around me when the going gets cold – things I like to call my Winter Survival Kit - Which I’m about to share with you!

  • My winter outfits are designed to keep me warm but most importantly to look super stylish. Leggings are a life-saver on really cold days with knee high boots and a tailored coat. For the not so cold days, leggings and a bad*ss leather jacket with sky high stiletto booties :-)
Winter Survival Gear

  • Changing up your interior decor for the winter helps to bring some warmth and coziness. Adding colorful accents that pop will bring in some fun and personality, and help you survive the cold winter. My winter survival kit each year always includes swapping out accessories, window treatments and pillows or adding throws, layering area rugs and bringing in lots of flowers and greenery.
Color Your World For Winter
  • And of course the ever important Christmas decorating. I am sure I speak for everyone when I say that Christmas decor is a part of their winter survival kit. Spending time with family and friends, Christmas celebrations at church and throughout the community, volunteering and giving back to the community are also key things that help me survive the winter.

Christmas Decor
  • And the biggest winter survival item is my birthday!!! Yes, I am a December birthday girl….the 12th to be exact! I’m gonna party like it’s 1999!! :-)
Happy Birthday To Me
  • And finally, a list of random items that are dear to me and bring me comfort and warmth during the winter season. Vegetable soup and fruit salad always warms the heart. A nice bubble bath with candles all around is very nice every once in a while, a favorite scarf, favorite books and magazines for lazy Sunday afternoon reading, and luxurious body and hand creams to restore softness to my skin. Oh the joys of winter when you have a winter survival kit!

Budget Decorating: Styling An Ikea Etagere

I regularly receive emails from folks asking about budget decorating, especially how to  take an inexpensive piece of furniture and making it look fabulous. To address those questions, I decided to do a little segment every once in a while on my blog called “Budget Decorating” where I will highlight some projects done on a tight budget.

I have to admit that Ikea was never a place that I have shopped in the past for my clients, but I have found that one or two pieces placed in the context of a well designed room works just as well as a pricier piece.

I myself, have used a couple of their pieces to fill some space and add some function in my new work-in-progress design studio.

The office area (formerly the only bedroom in this old Victorian) is currently set up as a place to sit with my clients and discuss the numbers part of their design projects, review and sign contracts etc, and where I will be doing paperwork. I wanted it to be comfortable, light and airy and a clutter-free zone. I will be showing the finished space in a future blog post, but for now I wanted to focus on how I addressed a dead space that is the walkway to the other rooms in the space.

Since I am on a really tight budget I decided to bring in an inexpensive Ikea etagere to fill the area without visually or physically taking up space. I chose the etagere because it was open, with very clean lines and had glass shelves that helped to give it a less obtrusive appearance.

Ikea Vittsjo Shelving

Ikea Vittsjo Shelving

The etagere started out as a box of parts, and I am eternally grateful to my friend Courtney for helping me put it together. He was able to assemble it in about half an hour. The cost for this run of the mill metal shelving was $70.00

Here’s what it looks like now

After Styling of teh Ikea Vittsjo Shelving

After Styling of teh Ikea Vittsjo Shelving

I now call it an etagere because that sounds a bit more fancy than shelving. :-)

For about $120.00 I was able to solve the issue of the dead space in the walkway with something beautiful and functional. Most of the tcotchkes you see here, are just left overs from long ago projects or things laying around my garage from my recent move. I did purchase the new picture frames (pictures of the kids will be added :-) ) and rosette candle holders from ZGallerie. The etagere provided a great place to display a few of my design books and magazines.

The key to styling a bookcase, etagere or shelving is to mix up the textures, layering, adding various heights and levels, adding softness with florals, keeping the colors fairly consistent or complementary, and using things that have special meaning to you. I displayed a few of my favorite design books & magazines, and my 1920′s peacocks are a favorite treasure – I love peacocks and birds in general :-)

Other items that you can use are baskets or storage boxes on the bottom shelves to add some visual weight and ground the whole unit. I chose not to because I wanted to keep it open and airy.

This etagere can be used in any room of your home really – In a kitchen as extra storage for cook books, wine bottles or dishes. In a bedroom closet as a place for shoes or sweaters. In a game room or kids’ play area for storing games and toys. In a laundry room for storing detergent and cleaning supplies. In a garage to get things up off the floor (if you’re anything like me :-) ), and even in the pantry for storing cereal boxes and canned goods. You can even ”bunch” two or three or more side by side to fill a large wall space and add tons of storage in a room.

Where would you use this Ikea etagere and what are some favorite items you would display? Leave me a comment below

One more thing before I go. If you like Ikea prices but not necessarily the look of some of their pieces, this website has tons of products and ideas that you can use to add some fabulousness to a plain piece. Check out O’Verlays Decorative Fretwork Panels to see what I mean

I hope you have been inspired by my budget decorating! Now go forth and decorate! :-)

Saturday Self-Care Snippet

Quotes_Gratitude1Have you ever wondered why it is easier to gripe and complain about life’s little issues, and even the big ones? Well it is human nature to make ourselves miserable by complaining and being impatient when things don’t go our way. It is like reflex, and the first place our minds go to…..unless we train our minds to BE MORE.

Imagine what would happen if we got up each morning and made the choice to be positive. With the innocence of a child, we approach each day with great expectations that something wonderful is about to happen.

imagesImagine if we had an attitude of gratitude despite the storms of life – counting our blessings and being thankful in all things.

Imagine if instead of focusing on all that is bad in our life, we help someone who is struggling. I am sure you will find that not only is it a blessing to the person receiving your help…..it will be a blessing to you, and completely changes your perspective. It’s like magic! Try it! :-)

The truth is, we are not guaranteed a trouble free life. But the beauty is that we don’t have to go through life alone.

45277_399773010098346_593615114_aI have learned that gratitude is one of the best things you can do for yourself  when navigating life’s murky waters.

What do you do when life hands you lemons?

Do you plan a day at the spa or lunch with friends? Dive into a hobby, or a good book? Or do you fall victim to complaining, impatience and ingratitude? I admit that I am guilty of the latter, but like many of you may testify, I am a work in progress. When I catch myself complaining, I turn it around to being grateful for the things that are going right. I go to my happy place: Laying in bed and reading one of my favorite shelter magazines or a book on design (I have quite the collection, so there will always be self-indulging moments like this :-) ). House Beautiful and Traditional Home are still my favorites!

Design Crush: Plate Racks

In my quest to decorate my new design studio with a fresh updated feel, yet remaining true to the age of the building, I have been searching far and wide for creative storage ideas that would look like they have always been a part of the property.

Casa Vilora Interiors Design Studio 5602 Franz Rd Katy TX 77493

Casa Vilora Interiors Design Studio 5602 Franz Rd Katy TX 77493

My new studio is a cute, historic Victorian that was built as a rent house in 1905, and was never occupied by the actual owners until the 1950′s when an addition was done on the backside of the property. It is the perfect little place for my design business, and I hope to own it in about a year :-) But enough about the property itself. I will be sure to fill you in as time progresses and share photos of the interior space. Today’s post is about finding creative ways for storage in this small space. Storage that will not only be functional and help keep me organized, but aesthetically pleasing as well.

Recently I have been crushing on plate racks. So much so, that I have presented a sketch to a new client for a custom piece for her breakfast room, and she is so in love with this idea! Her initial thought for that main wall was to hang a piece of art. A plate rack is a more creative and functional way to create a focal point, and accessorize a small space like a breakfast room, without using up a lot of physical and visual space.

Plate Rack

Plate Rack

Can you see why I’m obsessed? This plate rack has allowed utilitarian items like plates, platters and mugs to look oh so elegant!

plate rack

I’m especially drawn to plate racks that display the platters and plates horizontally. This way, you are able to enjoy the beauty of your collection everyday…..and easier to dust too! :-)

Plate racks

A plate rack display should be treated like any other vignette in a room. Scale, balance and proportion should be kept in mind. Varying the sizes, heights, and textures of the pieces, make for a more interesting display. I much prefer that the colors of the pieces are more monochromatic, and all the pieces relate to each other somehow. But whatever you love to collect I’m sure will work beautifully when properly arranged. As I always say, decorate and live with things you love!

plate racks

Notice how impactful this collection of blue and white china is? This is a great way to display a collection versus having them all over the room. This absolutely makes a statement and a great focal point!

Can you say FABULOUSNESS! This gorgeous room has a lot of wonderful features, but the plate display definitely caught my eye. I especially love the curved shape of this piece. It adds an elegant and feminine touch to this room.

Notice how well they work in a more formal setting……..

…….as well as as casual settings!

Plate-Rack-Pinecone-Branch-GTL1206-de

They work beautifully for displaying holiday dishes and help bring the season alive in your home. How adorable is this display with the pinecones and mini Christmas trees!

plate rack

And in case you’re wondering, they are not just for plates and platters or for the kitchen. They are great in a nursery or playroom as display for toys and books.

plate rack

They don’t have to cost an arm and a leg, especially if you are handy….(even just  a little bit). This plate rack above was repurposed from a baby’s crib! Talk about creative!

Here’s one last one for good measure :-)

Love the bead board touch!

Hope you are as inspired as I am by these gorgeous plate racks. Hope to have mine completed soon! Please come back daily for updates about my new design studio!

A Weekend Away…….

French Quarter at Dusk

Although this is the busiest time of year for my business, I have decided to take a much needed weekend away from work and even from the kids. My friend Aimee and I will be driving to her old stomping grounds, and boy do we have some fun events planned. Parties, museums, art galleries, music festivals, even carriage rides are on the list of things to do. Most of all, I am hoping to be inspired by the scenery, people and architecture. I sure hope I can stick to my new healthy way of eating, because this is a city full of fine, world famous cuisine.

Can you guess where I am headed for the weekend? Leave me a comment below and let me know where you think I am heading off to.

I will not be posting any articles over the next few days, but I will be sure to tell you all about my trip when I return next week. Stay tuned :-)

Hope you all have a wonderful and fun filled weekend like I plan to have!

My Weakness For Chinoiserie

b65289d6d40080a1c7eba9a5869cdeb8Chinoiserie is a favorite pattern of mine. This beautiful, classic pattern can be found in elegant wallpapers, fabrics, ceramics, furniture and folding screens.

Chinoiserie is a French term that refers to European artistic styles with Chinese artistic influences. It is characterized by fanciful imagery of Chinese motifs. Chinoiserie entered the European market in the mid to late 17th century and its popularity peaked in the 18th century. Its use was mainly in the decorative arts. These days Chinoiserie is used in the most elegant of interior spaces, even in clothing as can be seen in this beautiful hand painted silk dress worn by The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. Click here to view

I especially love the use of hand painted silk Chinoiserie wallpapers in formal dining rooms and elegant powder rooms. Companies like de Gournay and Gracie have a vast selection that is highly customizable to suit any color scheme. While it may not be the least expensive wall treatment you can find, it definitely has a timeless appeal that will hold its value and beauty for a very long time.

Here are some very inspiring photos of Chinoiserie influenced rooms and furniture. These photos are from various sources

If you want to try the look without the commitment of wallpapering a whole room, try adding an accent piece like  Chinoiserie chest or a room divider. Add it in accessories like ceramic vases or pillows with a Chinoiserie pattern. Another way to use this beautiful motif is by purchasing wallpaper remnants from your local wallpaper store or online and wallpaper the inside back of a built in bookcase, or decoupaging an inexpensive garage sale chest or dresser.
