Casa Vilora Interiors Design Studio

About a year ago, after much thought and prayers, I decided to move forward with my dream of opening a design studio where my clients could come to (if they chose to) and be inspired with everything that they see. The design studio is more of an “idea studio” instead of a retail storefront. I wanted to create a welcoming, comfortable environment, that felt more like a well appointed home with beautifully designed room vignettes for my clients to get ideas and be inspired. The space is about 1050 square feet and the space plan will accommodate two living room vignettes, a dining room vignette, a bedroom vignette and the work areas and sample/resource library in the rear. It is located in a beautiful building called Chelsea Market built in the 1980′s in the middle of Houston’s Museum District.

The dream so far has been very slow to become reality. In fact, the studio is still very much a work in progress. It is partially furnished and doesn’t quite resemble the vision in my head just yet. Because business has been a bit slower than anticipated, I am waiting or the financial resources to get the dream back on track without having to compromise on the vision. In the meantime, I work hard, and network a lot to build business. I know the big pay off is somewhere on the horizon :-)

My design studio was also meant to feature the work of “starving artists” whose wonderful creations sometimes go unnoticed by the major art galleries here in the Museum District. This was my way of giving back – by helping someone to get a running start at their creative dream. Eventually I will have “Art Nights” twice a month to feature pieces from a few artists and have them meet and greet patrons and give a bit of background information about their creations.

One such artist is my very good friend Aimee Chaison. She is a fabulous artist who works in acrylic, oil and resin. She is very creative and does everything from jewelry design to canvas to wall murals. Some of her work can be found on her Etsy shop RedNCKDebutante. She is the wonderful talent behind this beautiful wall mural in my design studio. Take a look

This mural was done by painting the walls in a gold metallic house paint from Ralph Lauren’s Regent Metallics Collection. She then made a grid on the wall using painter’s tape (the grid gets the proportions and scale just right) and then sketched out branches in pencil and then she painted away. The mural took her a couple of weeks to finish, painting maybe an hour or two a day. Everyone who walks into my design studio swears it is wallpaper! She did a fabulous job, and these pictures do not do it justice! This area will be the dining room vignette in the near future.

She has been a very great encourager and supporter of my dream and I am happy to call her a friend.

I will have wonderful pictures of the completed space hopefully in the very near future.

Eclectic Room Inspiration

Are you considering a room redo? Maybe you are struggling with the direction you want to go as far as the style and feel of the room? One way to overcome this design style block, is to call in a design professional. A good designer knows what questions to ask to help you uncover your design style and aesthetic, and of course take care of all the planning and implementation of your new space. But if you’d rather take the DIY approach, the next best thing is to browse design blogs and websites, and shelter magazines for style ideas. It may be quite possible that you already own some of the pieces you need to create a brand new room makeover, and it may be a great adventure shopping flea markets, estate sales, and auctions.

By going with an eclectic look you have the ability to mix and match pieces from different design periods and design styles and still achieve a very well thought out, cohesive and beautiful result. Imagination goes a long way when creating an eclectic space that seemed to have evolved over time. It does require a steady hand and some editing and restraint. Eclectic can easily head in the direction of “cluttered” if not carefully done. The key to achieving that cohesive, pulled-together look is by observing certain principles of design

  • Scale – Basically, this refers to size, or grandness of the main pieces in the room. They should all have similar scale.
  • Balance – Refers to how these pieces relate to each other. Balance should be a prime consideration when combining disparate items
  • Color – Don’t go for pieces that are all red or all blue or all yellow, but instead, look for similar color schemes, a common color that runs through each style, or simply a common “temperature” — for instance, red and orange are warm, while blue and purple are cool.

The room shown below is an eclectic space with some ethnic or global influences, that is very relaxing. Take a look at the 6 tips that you can take away to inspire your own eclectic room makeover.

Designer Thingies: What The Heck Is It?

While my blog contest is still in effect, I promised to post the article with the details of the contest each day until Monday, June 3rd when I announce the winner. But me and my OCD, I couldn’t bring myself to posting the same article three days in a row :-), not that there’s anything wrong with doing that :-)

I still want to give everyone a good chance to win the fabulous prize for naming the new mascot for “No Naked Windows”, so I decided to add the link to the blog contest in my post for today. Feel free to hop on over there and participate. You could be the lucky winner! :-)

Here’s the link: Name The New Mascot For “No Naked Windows”. Good luck!

Ok, let’s get to today’s short post (It is so last minute, so please bear with me :-) )

Every once in a while I will be featuring a special tool or product that we use very often in the design world, that may (or may not) be unknown to you if you don’t work in the industry, and will probably leave you wondering, “What The Heck Is It?” You, my loyal readers will then leave me a comment with your best guess of what the heck the tool or product is, and what it is used for. I will provide the answer to the question in my blog post for the following day.

I promise I will never make it too difficult to guess :-)

Ok, here’s our product for today. Can you guess what the heck it is? and what is it used for?

Please comment below with your best guess of what the heck this product is. I can’t wait to see the answers you come up with! Have fun guessing!

Ok, I can’t just leave you hanging today without providing some valuable decorating tips and information in today’s article. So with that in mind, here are 6 quick tips for summer decorating in your home:

  1.  Bring the outdoors in and the indoors out. – Add some colorful throw pillows to your patio furniture using indoor/outdoor fabrics. Add an outdoor area rug to define the seating area. Add a dining area for al fresco summer dining.
  2. Switch out your coffee table or end tables with some colorful garden stools. Overstock.com has a great selection.
  3. Decorate with fresh flowers. You may even switch out your typical flower vases to colorful lemonade pitchers for a bit of whimsy. Pier1.com has a great selection.
  4. Wallpaper the back of a bookcase or a closet in a fun or colorful pattern. MuralsYourWay.com has a great selection of removable and re-usable wallpaper
  5. Organize and store in pretty containers. Add some floating shelves to a dead wall space or add colorful containers in the kitchen to store cookies and such. ContainerStore.com has tons of solutions for storage.
  6. Add decorative throw pillows indoors in fun and trendy colors and patterns for some pizzazz. My online store has a great selection

Ok, that’s all I have for you today. Don’t forget to stop by my previous blog post and participate in the “Name The New Mascot For No Naked Windows” contest. The winner will be announced on Monday, June 3rd, so enter as many times as you like until then.

Name The New Mascot For “No Naked Windows” :-)

I need to ask a favor of you guys (well it’s more like playing another silly game :-)), but before I do, let me explain about the cute little guy you are looking at below………

Photo: Secret Garden FaceBook Page

Photo: Secret Garden FaceBook Page

Not too long ago, I came across this photo on a Facebook page I follow called Secret Garden, of this cute little turtle looking longingly out of a window. I don’t quite know why, because I am not a big fan of reptiles, but I fell in love with the little guy. (Isn’t he cute? :-)) In a way, he reminds me of my Chiweenie, Rufus! I shared him on my Facebook Page and apparently I’m not the only one who feels this way :-) He just seems to have a personality and apparently some self awareness.

I decided to use the little guy as the mascot for my next window treatment promotion that I am running for the summer. Kinda makes sense since he is looking out of a naked window :-) right?

This is the text that will caption this cute little picture:

“Have your naked windows left you sad and blue? Then race on over to Casa Vilora Interiors and No Naked Windows and take advantage of our summer sale! Up to 20% off all window treatments including custom drapery, blinds, shutters and energy saving options too! Sale starts on June 1 and runs the entire summer! Contact us now or visit our online store to see your options for custom drapery panels”

What do you think?

Ok, so here’s where the favor (or game) comes in. The game is called “Name The New Mascot For No Naked Windows”. Here goes:

You guessed it, I need your help figuring  out what to name this little guy….or girl! (Equal opportunity here :-)) He is much too cute to go nameless….don’t you think? :-)

To make it a bit more fun, I will be rewarding the person who comes up with the best and most appropriate name (That I will love) with a fabulous prize! Who doesn’t love winning fabulous prizes?!

I’ll tell you what the fabulous prize is in just a second, but in order to win, you MUST like my two Facebook pages No Naked Windows and Casa Vilora Interiors if you haven’t already done so, and you MUST share this blog post.
