Budget Conscious Custom Drapery Panels

Most of my friends and colleagues know about my undying love affair with fabrics. I love fabrics because of how they change the look of a room and add softness, which every room needs.

I also have a love for Window treatments – drapery panels to be exact. My motto is “No Room Is Complete Without The Right Window Treatment” and these are words I live by. I truly believe that the right window treatment design, coupled with the right fabric choice, enhance the look and feel of a room like nothing else can.

With that said, I am also a big believer that custom drapery is way better than most store-bought curtains. Notice I call them curtains here?…..This is because they are usually too short for most standard windows, skimpy and inferior grade fabrics, and not lined very well. Plus they are usually not very unique.

The point here is not to bash store-bought curtains, but instead, help you see the difference and benefits of having drapery panels made specifically for your window, without spending much more. Having the ability to customize your window treatments to your specific needs I think is priceless. Imagine picking out your own fabric from hundreds of options, whether you want non-functional or functional, the type of lining (blackout, thermal, or just regular sateen), the option to add interlining for more fullness, picking your header style (pinch pleats, goblet pleats, grommets), and of course the exact finished length to complement the size of your window (no high-water panels here :-) ).

Now imagine being able to do that on a reasonable budget!

And  in case I haven’t gotten your attention yet – imagine that you could have a pair of custom drapery panels for as little as $269! There’s no reason why anyone should have naked windows, right? :-)

I created No Naked Windows a few years ago as an online shopping resource for custom drapery panels for the budget conscious. Custom drapery orders is a big part of my business, and I see everyday how expensive they can get. My goal was to make custom drapery affordable for everyone, with quality hand-made construction and beautiful materials. You can get the look of high-end for a fraction of the cost!

Ordering your custom drapery panels is easy. Click to go to our online store and click the custom drapery panels tab. Drapery panels are available as one width, one and a half width or two widths, and are sold in pairs. Our panels are available in 100% dupioni silk, faux silk/polyester, 100% linen, cotton twill, cotton duck, and burlap. There are several patterns and color options for each group.

What’s great is that you can also choose the color block option (which is a big trend now) where you can use up to three different colors from the same group for each panel. All panels are lined in standard sateen or you can upgrade to blackout lining. We will be adding thermal lining soon for the energy saving benefits. There is also an option for adding interlining. You need to select the standard header that best matches your decor – pinch pleat, cartridge pleat, french pleat, goblet pleat or grommets.

Finished lengths are available in 84″, 96″, 108″ and 120″, however there is a special request text box where you can type your  request for a finished length between 72″ and 120″ at no additional charge. You can indicate if you want them longer than 120″, but we would have to call to discuss additional costs. Finished draperies can be very heavy and will cost more for shipping and handling.

Once your payment is received and verified, your custom panels go into production and are delivered to you in 4-6 weeks ready to hang. We can even install for you at an additional charge, if you are located in the Houston area.

Studio Happenings: Draperies Installed Finally

As I always say, nothing makes a room like adding draperies or curtains. They are great for a focal point in a room, they add color and coziness and pulls a room together.

Casa vilora interiors drapery
If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you will no doubt be familiar with my 1905 Victorian house that I am fixing up as my design studio. It has been a few months since I got my hands on this hidden gem, and since then I have been slowly reviving it from the beautiful mess it was.

Casa Vilora Interiors Design Studio located at 5602 Franz Rd Katy TX 77493

Casa Vilora Interiors Design Studio located at 5602 Franz Rd Katy TX 77493

I have been trying to stay true to the charm and character of this 1905 historical home, while recognizing my personal design aesthetic, and of course keeping my eye on the bottom line.

The concept behind the decoration of my design studio, is to create a home-like atmosphere centered on hospitality, so that my clients and potential clients would feel almost like they were invited into my own home. That way they can see themselves in a Casa Vilora Interiors designed space – even if it is not necessarily their personal design aesthetic. It is more of a mood and feeling that I am trying to capture.

I brought in comfortable upholstery to allow clients to sit and relax and talk freely about their interior design dreams. The dining room/conference room vignette also boasts a settee and upholstered chairs instead of typical dining room chairs. It is all about comfort and homey-ness.

It is still a work in progress, as there are still a lot of small projects to be done, but I am definitely on a roll.

This past Saturday, I finally had the draperies installed in three of the room vignettes – the living room or reception area, the dining room or conference room, and the study or where all the paperwork happens :-)

I will share some of the pictures taken with my iPad, but I will be bringing in a professional photographer after it’s all done.

First off the living room/reception area. These are lined pinch pleat drapery panels in a blue and white cotton damask fabric. The custom pillows for the sofas are still in production for the room, and those will definitely help to finish the room.

This next picture is the dining room or conference room vignette. This room is where I will sit down with clients and show them all the wonderful ideas I came up with for their projects.

These draperies are a beautiful linen cotton blend. I just love the colors

This is the study or the room where the magic happens :-) There are actually a total of six drapery panels in this room, but the room needed a bit of organizing at the time of the photos :-)

I just love this beautiful geometric Kravet linen fabric

I added a piece of art done by my daughter when she was in 8th grade. It was judged for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, but wasn’t selected. She insists she doesn’t like it at all….I mean she has gotten so much better now, but I just love this piece. I framed it in an inexpensive Ikea frame, and I think it looks like a million bucks! You can see more of my daughter’s work from a previous Artist Spotlight post. Click here

There are quite a few more projects I will be tackling before the Spring Open House in April.

  • Paint the small powder room including the cabinets, trim, and even the old claw foot tub
  • Paint the kitchen cabinets
  • Decorate the powder room and kitchen vignette
  • Finish hanging plates from my white plate collection
  • Build plate rack for wall in kitchen
  • Add spring flowers to the front porch

Wow, still a long laundry list of items to be done, but I’ll get there!

Thanks for checking out my design studio happenings. More coming soon so stay tuned!

I am heading off to Dallas for the next few days for Spring Break, so I won’t be posting for a few days. But be sure to check in on my Facebook page for updates about my Spring Break trip to Dallas. You won’t want to miss my visit to The Dallas Market Center. I know it will be amazing!

Custom Drapery Panels On A Budget Using Burlap

Custom drapery panels are one of the least expensive, yet beautiful options to dress up a naked window. Drapery panels can be functional, which means that they are made to close completely for privacy and protection from the sun, or they can be non-functional. This means they are decorative fixed panels that are not meant to close to cover the window. If privacy is desired, a window treatment such as blinds, shutters, roller shades, honeycomb shades etc, usually acts as the first layer or privacy layer, with the non-functional drapery panels as the second layer adding softness, color and style.

Depending on fabric choice, window size and hardware chosen, drapery panels can range anywhere from $1500 to several thousand dollars not including installation! But with my custom drapery panels available on my online store, you can get the same great quality for a lot less!

My custom BURLAP drapery panels start at only $269.00 per pair!! This includes your choice of color from twenty different options, your choice of lining (sateen or blackout), or you can choose unlined or even add interlining. You also get to choose the header or pleat type (grommets, French pleat, pinch pleat, cartridge pleat) and of course the finished length desired. There is also the option for color-blocked panels, which means that you can use up to three different colors per panel. Here are examples of burlap panels from my design studio display (The two drapery panels on the right)

Name The New Mascot For “No Naked Windows” :-)

I need to ask a favor of you guys (well it’s more like playing another silly game :-)), but before I do, let me explain about the cute little guy you are looking at below………

Photo: Secret Garden FaceBook Page

Photo: Secret Garden FaceBook Page

Not too long ago, I came across this photo on a Facebook page I follow called Secret Garden, of this cute little turtle looking longingly out of a window. I don’t quite know why, because I am not a big fan of reptiles, but I fell in love with the little guy. (Isn’t he cute? :-)) In a way, he reminds me of my Chiweenie, Rufus! I shared him on my Facebook Page and apparently I’m not the only one who feels this way :-) He just seems to have a personality and apparently some self awareness.

I decided to use the little guy as the mascot for my next window treatment promotion that I am running for the summer. Kinda makes sense since he is looking out of a naked window :-) right?

This is the text that will caption this cute little picture:

“Have your naked windows left you sad and blue? Then race on over to Casa Vilora Interiors and No Naked Windows and take advantage of our summer sale! Up to 20% off all window treatments including custom drapery, blinds, shutters and energy saving options too! Sale starts on June 1 and runs the entire summer! How To Hang Drapery Panels

Purchasing and hanging drapery panels can be very overwhelming. There are a lot of little details that need to be considered, which we will talk about briefly in just a second. Most big box stores that offer curtain panels usually have them stocked at 84″ lengths or shorter, and if you are lucky, you may be able to order from their online stores up to 95″ lengths. But what if you have taller windows?

I have seen this happen so often on my in-home consultations. People usually move into a new home and are anxious to cover their windows whether for privacy or decorative reasons, so they run out to the big box store down the street to find an inexpensive solution. But is it really a solution if it is not addressing the problem? Store bought curtain panels rarely fit the windows properly. As I mentioned earlier, they are usually too short,  not many choices available, usually unlined or inadequately lined, and little or no consideration given to aesthetic and your energy savings needs. As I always say, you are going to spend the money anyway, why not spend it right. Custom drapery panels are made to fit your windows, and are a beautiful and timeless solution when done right.

Here at No Naked Windows, we have made it easy to order custom drapery panels through our online store. You get to choose your fabric type (silk, faux silk, linen, cotton, burlap etc), your choice of solid or patterned fabric, your choice of header (the pleating at the top of the drapery panels), the finished length, type of lining, or even the choice of using two or three different fabrics for a color blocking effect. Visit our online store to see your options. They start at just $269 per pair!

Once you have determined that custom drapery panels are the way to go, you now need to know how to measure for them and how to hang them, which directly impacts the finished length to order. Measuring is simple – just measure from the floor to your desired height

Some additional tips for measuring:

The finished length is the actual length of the finished panels. To measure for the finished length of your custom drapery panels, simply measure from the floor to the desired height from where you want the panels to hang. A good rule of thumb is: If the space above your window is 8″ or less, it is usually more aesthetically pleasing to hang your drapery panels right at the ceiling. If the height is more than 8″ then you can determine how high above the window you would like to hang the panels. Please note if you have low ceilings hanging the panels closer to the ceiling gives the illusion of more height. One more thing to keep in mind is the hardware you will be using to hang your panels. The hardware will add approximately 1″-2″ to the overall length when hung. If you desire some puddling in your drapery panels, you can add 2-3″ for a trouser break look or 6-8″ for a formal puddled look.

Here are a few illustrations of the Do’s and Don’ts of how to hang drapery panels

how to hang drapery panels

In this example there are  few don’ts:

  • Don’t hang the drapery panels right above the window. Hang drapery panels closer to the ceiling or crown molding to give he illusion of a higher ceiling
  • Don’t hang drapery panels so far above the floor. The minimum floor break is 1″. otherwise your drapery panels will look like high water pants
  • Don’t hang your drapery panels so far into the window. Hanging drapery panels starting at the edge of the window outward, helps to visually widen the window. Be careful that the edges of the window aren’t visible. Drapery panels should cover about 3-4″ of the window edges on either side. This applies to decorative drapery panels. If privacy is desired with your drapery panels, then you will need much more fabric for fullness, and room on either side of the window for stack-back ( The stacking back of the fabric when the drapery panels are in open position)

ILLUSTRATION B

In this example, at least the drapery panels are touching the floor, but notice that they are still hung too close to the top of the window and the drapery panels are too far inside the window.

ILLUSTRATION C

In this example, it’s finally done right:

  • The drapery panels are at a 1″ floor break
  • The drapery panels are hung closer to the ceiling
  • The drapery panels are hung at the window’s edges and outwards

I get this question a lot: What if I have double windows with drywall or trim in between both windows? Here’s the answer:

ILLUSTRATION D

1813_553453858020937_2090014473_n

I recommend ordering a third drapery panel to cover the drywall between the two windows….especially if over 6″ wide. This helps the overall window treatment to flow better and look like one unit and be more cohesive. If you have beautiful wood trim casings around your windows that you wish to show off, then no need for the third panel, as long as there isn’t more than about 18″ between the two windows with casing included, in which case you may need to treat them as two separate windows with two drapery panels each.

Here’s an example of drapery panels I designed and had installed for my client about two years ago. Notice that there wasn’t a lot of room above the window, so we took it all the way to the crown molding.

463358_378092702223721_110730298959964_1227720_1284562932_o

A couple more examples:

579086_631355073547965_65530747_n cropped

These are actually drapery panels with handkerchief swags. I included this picture to illustrate what happens when we are working with a bay window. You still want the windows to be one unit and have a cohesive flow. Here we used three different rods, but added a special hardware called an “elbow” to join them together at each 45 degree angle. The elbow is quite flexible and works much like our elbows do. The drapery panels are then installed to wrap around the angles for a better flow and cleaner look.

We will be running our summer special on custom drapery panels and all other window treatments starting June 1st through the entire summer – up to 20% off! A Library As A Family Hang Out

tgif3

Let’s do the TGIF happy dance!! :-)

I am really happy this hectic week is coming to an end. I can put my feet up at least for the weekend until reality hits again on Monday. Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do, but relaxing is great too! :-)

Ok, so here’s another snippet of a room I completed last year.

Library

This room is actually a very large library, that is jam packed with books. My client loves books and has them proudly displayed in wall to wall bookshelves throughout the room. This is a really close knit family, and they all hang out in this room, although they have several other family areas in the home (let’s see, there’s mom and dad, 4 at home, one on the way, one in college and two grown up and on their own….I think I’ve got everyone covered :-))

This is the same family I have worked with on multiple projects. When it came time to do this room, their requirements were:

  1. A seating area (she was thinking just two chairs)
  2. Keep all the books!

When styling bookshelves I like to mix books with other objects, but in this instance, I kept the books exactly the way they were in the room….because they do get used.

I completed the seating area with a small library table with wrought iron detail, custom chaise lounge, custom upholstered occasional chairs (notice the fabulous two toned fabrics?), a custom upholstered ottoman that doubles as a cocktail table and on the other side of the room, a round table and 4 cube ottomans where the kids can do their artwork and play board games. Of course, no room is complete without some pillows and accessories. My clients already owned the area rug, so that dictated our color scheme. I custom designed and had the gorgeous red silk draperies fabricated (notice the wonderful greek key trim detail?) Just amazing!

Here are some other views of the room.

Notice the beautiful cut velvet fabric on the backside of the chairs and the rich and luxurious chenille on the front of the chairs. My clients love these custom touches, and I love to give it to them. These fabrics were very high-end but also made to last.

DSC05632

DSC05616

And check out these fun ottomans for the kids. They are custom upholstered in a beautiful faux leather python print. Notice the greek key detail is repeated on the nailhead trim?…..yep, it’s all in the details

DSC05634

Ok I have to admit that I don’t have pictures of the full view of the room. Why? At the time of install, hubby wasn’t home to clean his desk and we didn’t want to touch anything that he might be working on :-)  He is a doctor, so a life could depend on that decision :-)

So from this large library, I created two wonderful seating areas where the whole family can hang out, plus a desk area that can accommodate two users, and of course tons of storage for the beautiful books. This library/family hang-out can now comfortably seat around 9 or 10 people! That is awesome!

If you need help getting multiple uses out of one space, whether small or large, feel free to contact me here

Wishing you all a fabulous Friday and a fantastic weekend! :-)

Throw Back Thursday: A Wide Open Family Room

A Family Room Done Over 8 Years Ago

A Family Room Done Over 8 Years Ago

Hello All! Happy Throw Back Thursday! Well that would only make sense if you use Instagram. I do, and you can follow me here! :-)

Throw Back Thursday or #TBT is an Instagram community hashtag where users post older pictures of themselves or something that’s dear to them – A blast from the past if you will.

Ok, so here’s my throw back aka blast from the past! :-) The room pictured above is a family room that I did over 8 years ago. This client is very near and dear to my heart…..well actually that client is ME :-)

This is actually the family room in my current home (The 4300sf one that I am downsizing from, if you’ve been following my recent posts). Most of the furniture pieces here are from a previous smaller home I owned and I had to make them work in this home with wide open spaces and volumnous ceilings. Everything seemed so small in the room, so I got creative and brought in color! First I painted the room in a warm neutral from Behr Paints. I decided to use red as the accent color to cozy up and ground the space a bit. I brought in a beautiful large area rug and added pillows and accessories repeating the red throughout the space. The formal living room, formal dining, study, kitchen and breakfast room are all basically somewhat open to each other, so I repeated the red in smaller doses in the adjoining rooms.

Here is another view of the room

Family Room

This picture was taken right after we moved in and alot changed in this room over the years…. a sleeker TV set for one, taller (20′) drapery panels, larger area rug and taller wing back occasional chairs. I was just starting out in my business, money was tight and I had to make do with what I had and be creative. For example, the drapery panels were actually oversized rectangular tablecloths that I simply hung unlined. You know I don’t like naked windows :-). I needed a larger area rug and so I saved up and purchased a beautiful oriental rug (not shown), that pulled together all the colors in the room.

Website Pics 005I created this vignette to break up the long hallway from the foyer to the family room. I did that red accent wall myself using a Behr metallic paint.

As you can see, my style back then leaned heavily towards traditional. With all the trends I follow, design magazines I read, courses I take, market events, and showrooms that I visit frequently, my taste has definitely changed and developed over the years. You will get to see much of my new design aesthetic in future blogs and videos about the new home. Stay tuned for that.

Ok, that’s all I have for you today! It was great going through old photos and seeing just how my design style has developed over the years.

What about you? what is your throw back memory for today?

A Monochromatic Dining Room Makeover

Hello All! It’s already Wednesday! Can you believe the week has been racing by so fast? I’m still hard at work packing like crazy, and man, I am getting such a good workout!

Monochromatic Dining Room

Ok, so today’s post will be one of those short but sweet ones I mentioned in a previous article. The picture you are looking at is a project I completed about two years ago. This room belongs to some really awesome clients that I have been working with now for several years. I have done pretty much every room in their home – one project after another. In fact, I have 2 fans and a custom iron bed to install in the near future. I’ve seen them through marriage, 2 beautiful babies and one more on the way, the upcoming wedding of an older daughter, and many other moments in between. I think I’m a family member at this point, and they were a referral! (The power of referrals :-))

Ok, so back to the room……This I believe was project #4. They wanted a calm, serene dining room for when they entertain. They are a devout Jewish family, so alot of their meals and prayer time happen in this dining room. The room is very small…..the smallest dining room I have worked with, but they needed as much seating as possible and storage for prayer books. Tall order for a small room!

We decided on a monochromatic blue/gray color scheme. The walls were painted in a Ralph Lauren Regent Metallic and has a subtle, soft shimmer. My clients enjoy the juxtaposition of rustic with refined, so they were quite excited when I found the perfect size dining table, made from reclaimed wood in Indonesia. The side chairs were custom upholstered in a wonderful blue/gray fabric and the host/hostess chairs are actually occasional chairs turned dining chairs. They were also custom upholstered in two different fabrics for a unique and luxurious touch. The zig-zag bookshelf was the unexpected element in the room, and was the perfect size to fit that small space. And who can ignore the beautiful drapery panels, made from a luscious stripe silk fabric. Even better looking in person!

Fabric Selection For Dining Room

Fabric Selection For Dining Room

My favorite part…the fabric selection. My client loves fabrics as much as I do, and I always get to use the finest on her projects :-). She was completely in love with this beautiful selection of silks and silk blends, velvets, and cut velvets. Notice the beautiful textures?!

I also added an area rug and the beautiful crystal drum chandelier, and very minimal accessories – adding a pop of orange in the table setting. My clients and I were really excited about this room!

Here a couple more shots for your viewing pleasure.
