Drapery Ideas For A Toddler’s Bedroom

Recently I received a call from a young lady looking to have some curtains done for her 4 year old son’s bedroom. She was a referral from a current client, so I was excited to meet with her to discuss her needs.

After meeting with her and taking measurements of the small window, I came up with a few options that would be fitting for the window. The window already had blinds, and privacy was not an issue, so we talked about doing simple drapery panels

Her son loves rocket ships and anything astronaut related. She already had a few rocket ship patterned fabrics that she purchased to make a custom quilt. The quilt is still being made by an Etsy shop owner, but based on the fabrics she showed me, I knew it would be very busy. This means that the window treatment had to be fairly simple to balance things out.

I like to provide my clients with as many visual aids as possible to help them see how the finished products will look. They are obviously not 100% realistic but are for illustration purposes. The illustrations are drawn to scale, the fabric patterns pictured on the sketches are not to scale.

Here are four options that I will be presenting

Option 1

Casa Vilora Interiors Drapery

In this first option I am presenting a combination of a pair of color blocked panels with grommet tops and a non-functional roman shade underneath. The color blocked panels are three different colors (blue, yellow and white) in cotton duck. The colors are pulled from all the other fabrics in the room. The drapery panels will be lined with blackout lining. The non-functional roman shade is a rocket ship patterned cotton fabric with a solid banding at the bottom in the blue fabric. Non-functional simply means that the shade is more of a fixed valance and not meant to pull down to close. This is a less expensive option if you like the look of roman shades, and don’t need the function of them.

Option 2

Casa Vilora Interiors Drapery

The second option is the same as option 1 but without the roman shade. This is the least expensive option of the four.

Option 3

Casa Vilora Drapery

In the third option, I am also recommending a color block grommet top panels done slightly different from options 1 and 2. Color blocked drapery panels are perfect for this room. Since the bedding will be very busy, the drapery needs to be simple. Solid color panels would be too simple and plain. Color blocked panels are still very simple but provides interest and a more custom touch.

In this option I am recommending a solid blue cotton duck fabric for the bottom two-thirds, and the top being the rocket ship patterned fabric. There is a red cotton banding in the center separating the two fabrics.

Option 4

Casa Vilora Interiors Drapery
In this last option, I am also recommending grommet top panels. This time they are a solid red cotton duck with a 4″ banding of the rocket ship fabric as the leading edge and hem of each panel.

Any one of these options will work great with the room, so it will boil down to the difference in cost for my client I’m sure.

I am choosing grommet tops over using rings since grommets have a more casual look and a bit more contemporary and masculine.

The hardware will be a brushed nickel finish.

I am excited to see which one she chooses, and of course the finished drapery! :-)

We are also doing some floor cushions, shams and pillows for this project, as well as recommending paint colors for the wall and bed frame.

Here are a couple examples of color block panels that I have done in the past, to give you a visual idea.

Game Room

This was a gameroom that I completed a few months ago using orange, blue and white linen fabrics. The pillows were also custom made.

This was a pair of gray and white linen fabrics in a clients study (chairs hadn’t arrived yet) :-)

Now that you’ve seen all four options, which would you choose?

Casa Vilora Interiors Storewide Sale For Fall

I remember growing up in very humble beginnings in Jamaica, that the one thing my mom would always do, is purchase new bedding and curtains for our tiny little home as the Christmas season approaches. We didn’t have much, but she would save for months to make this happen. Although We didn’t really experience seasonal weather changes in tropical Jamaica, that is one of the things that would beckon the autumn and winter seasons in. That tradition has stuck with me even as an adult – making seasonal changes to my decor.

Most people think  it is very challenging or even expensive to decorate seasonally, but we have made it much more affordable by offering our Casa Vilora Interiors Fall Sale on bedding, custom drapery, pillows, and even our Mail Order Decorator design service. For a very limited time, we are offering 10% off all purchases over $300 storewide, plus Free shipping!!

Simple fixes like changing your bedding, adding some throw pillows, or finally adding some drapery panels to those naked windows, are enough to give your rooms some pizzazz!!! Now is the time to get those projects going!

Simply visit our online Ecwid storefront to see our selection. If you don’t see what you are looking for, please send me an email through my about.me profile, and I will be happy to find it for you!

What Inspires You?

As an Interior Decorator, I find design inspiration everywhere – nature, food, architecture, the fashion runway, designer showrooms and market events, and definitely from my travels. I don’t get to travel as much as I would like, especially as a business owner, but when I do, I am always inspired by the beautiful surroundings and discovering new places and things.

My last trip to England and France was very inspiring. The beautiful countryside of England was a great stress reliever just driving through and seeing the beautiful rolling hills and pastures. Then there’s the wonderful architecture in Paris; definitely wonderful to see in person.

Here are a few pictures from my trip

Looking at these pictures from this trip definitely is putting me in the mood for another trip really soon. I’ve already started my “Europe Fund”, where I am saving for a trip to London and Paris next summer with the kiddos. This time I will be visiting some of the famous flea markets of Paris, and Versailles, I can’t wait! That’s what I call inspiration!

What inspires you? Leave me a comment and tell me all about it.

Eclectic Room Inspiration

Are you considering a room redo? Maybe you are struggling with the direction you want to go as far as the style and feel of the room? One way to overcome this design style block, is to call in a design professional. A good designer knows what questions to ask to help you uncover your design style and aesthetic, and of course take care of all the planning and implementation of your new space. But if you’d rather take the DIY approach, the next best thing is to browse design blogs and websites, and shelter magazines for style ideas. It may be quite possible that you already own some of the pieces you need to create a brand new room makeover, and it may be a great adventure shopping flea markets, estate sales, and auctions.

By going with an eclectic look you have the ability to mix and match pieces from different design periods and design styles and still achieve a very well thought out, cohesive and beautiful result. Imagination goes a long way when creating an eclectic space that seemed to have evolved over time. It does require a steady hand and some editing and restraint. Eclectic can easily head in the direction of “cluttered” if not carefully done. The key to achieving that cohesive, pulled-together look is by observing certain principles of design

  • Scale – Basically, this refers to size, or grandness of the main pieces in the room. They should all have similar scale.
  • Balance – Refers to how these pieces relate to each other. Balance should be a prime consideration when combining disparate items
  • Color – Don’t go for pieces that are all red or all blue or all yellow, but instead, look for similar color schemes, a common color that runs through each style, or simply a common “temperature” — for instance, red and orange are warm, while blue and purple are cool.

The room shown below is an eclectic space with some ethnic or global influences, that is very relaxing. Take a look at the 6 tips that you can take away to inspire your own eclectic room makeover.

Designer Thingies: What The Heck Is It?

While my blog contest is still in effect, I promised to post the article with the details of the contest each day until Monday, June 3rd when I announce the winner. But me and my OCD, I couldn’t bring myself to posting the same article three days in a row :-), not that there’s anything wrong with doing that :-)

I still want to give everyone a good chance to win the fabulous prize for naming the new mascot for “No Naked Windows”, so I decided to add the link to the blog contest in my post for today. Feel free to hop on over there and participate. You could be the lucky winner! :-)

Here’s the link: Name The New Mascot For “No Naked Windows”. Good luck!

Ok, let’s get to today’s short post (It is so last minute, so please bear with me :-) )

Every once in a while I will be featuring a special tool or product that we use very often in the design world, that may (or may not) be unknown to you if you don’t work in the industry, and will probably leave you wondering, “What The Heck Is It?” You, my loyal readers will then leave me a comment with your best guess of what the heck the tool or product is, and what it is used for. I will provide the answer to the question in my blog post for the following day.

I promise I will never make it too difficult to guess :-)

Ok, here’s our product for today. Can you guess what the heck it is? and what is it used for?

  1.  Bring the outdoors in and the indoors out. – Add some colorful throw pillows to your patio furniture using indoor/outdoor fabrics. Add an outdoor area rug to define the seating area. Add a dining area for al fresco summer dining.
  2. Switch out your coffee table or end tables with some colorful garden stools. Overstock.com has a great selection.
  3. Decorate with fresh flowers. You may even switch out your typical flower vases to colorful lemonade pitchers for a bit of whimsy. Pier1.com has a great selection.
  4. Wallpaper the back of a bookcase or a closet in a fun or colorful pattern. MuralsYourWay.com has a great selection of removable and re-usable wallpaper
  5. Organize and store in pretty containers. Add some floating shelves to a dead wall space or add colorful containers in the kitchen to store cookies and such. ContainerStore.com has tons of solutions for storage.
  6. Add decorative throw pillows indoors in fun and trendy colors and patterns for some pizzazz. My online store has a great selection

Ok, that’s all I have for you today. Don’t forget to stop by my previous blog post and participate in the “Name The New Mascot For No Naked Windows” contest. The winner will be announced on Monday, June 3rd, so enter as many times as you like until then.

Name The New Mascot For “No Naked Windows” :-)

I need to ask a favor of you guys (well it’s more like playing another silly game :-)), but before I do, let me explain about the cute little guy you are looking at below………

Photo: Secret Garden FaceBook Page

Photo: Secret Garden FaceBook Page

Not too long ago, I came across this photo on a Facebook page I follow called Secret Garden, of this cute little turtle looking longingly out of a window. I don’t quite know why, because I am not a big fan of reptiles, but I fell in love with the little guy. (Isn’t he cute? :-)) In a way, he reminds me of my Chiweenie, Rufus! I shared him on my Facebook Page and apparently I’m not the only one who feels this way :-) He just seems to have a personality and apparently some self awareness.

I decided to use the little guy as the mascot for my next window treatment promotion that I am running for the summer. Kinda makes sense since he is looking out of a naked window :-) right?

This is the text that will caption this cute little picture:

“Have your naked windows left you sad and blue? Then race on over to Casa Vilora Interiors and No Naked Windows and take advantage of our summer sale! Up to 20% off all window treatments including custom drapery, blinds, shutters and energy saving options too! Sale starts on June 1 and runs the entire summer! Contact us now or visit our online store to see your options for custom drapery panels”

What do you think?

Ok, so here’s where the favor (or game) comes in. The game is called “Name The New Mascot For No Naked Windows”. Here goes:

You guessed it, I need your help figuring  out what to name this little guy….or girl! (Equal opportunity here :-)) He is much too cute to go nameless….don’t you think? :-)

To make it a bit more fun, I will be rewarding the person who comes up with the best and most appropriate name (That I will love) with a fabulous prize! Who doesn’t love winning fabulous prizes?!

I’ll tell you what the fabulous prize is in just a second, but in order to win, you MUST like my two Facebook pages No Naked Windows and Casa Vilora Interiors if you haven’t already done so, and you MUST share this blog post. A Library As A Family Hang Out

tgif3

Let’s do the TGIF happy dance!! :-)

I am really happy this hectic week is coming to an end. I can put my feet up at least for the weekend until reality hits again on Monday. Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do, but relaxing is great too! :-)

Ok, so here’s another snippet of a room I completed last year.

Library

This room is actually a very large library, that is jam packed with books. My client loves books and has them proudly displayed in wall to wall bookshelves throughout the room. This is a really close knit family, and they all hang out in this room, although they have several other family areas in the home (let’s see, there’s mom and dad, 4 at home, one on the way, one in college and two grown up and on their own….I think I’ve got everyone covered :-))

This is the same family I have worked with on multiple projects. When it came time to do this room, their requirements were:

  1. A seating area (she was thinking just two chairs)
  2. Keep all the books!

When styling bookshelves I like to mix books with other objects, but in this instance, I kept the books exactly the way they were in the room….because they do get used.

I completed the seating area with a small library table with wrought iron detail, custom chaise lounge, custom upholstered occasional chairs (notice the fabulous two toned fabrics?), a custom upholstered ottoman that doubles as a cocktail table and on the other side of the room, a round table and 4 cube ottomans where the kids can do their artwork and play board games. Of course, no room is complete without some pillows and accessories. My clients already owned the area rug, so that dictated our color scheme. I custom designed and had the gorgeous red silk draperies fabricated (notice the wonderful greek key trim detail?) Just amazing!

Here’s a close up shot of the greek key trim detail

Here are some other views of the room.

DSC05629

Notice the beautiful cut velvet fabric on the backside of the chairs and the rich and luxurious chenille on the front of the chairs. My clients love these custom touches, and I love to give it to them. These fabrics were very high-end but also made to last.

DSC05632

DSC05616

And check out these fun ottomans for the kids. They are custom upholstered in a beautiful faux leather python print. Notice the greek key detail is repeated on the nailhead trim?…..yep, it’s all in the details

DSC05634

Ok I have to admit that I don’t have pictures of the full view of the room. Why? At the time of install, hubby wasn’t home to clean his desk and we didn’t want to touch anything that he might be working on :-)  He is a doctor, so a life could depend on that decision :-)

So from this large library, I created two wonderful seating areas where the whole family can hang out, plus a desk area that can accommodate two users, and of course tons of storage for the beautiful books. This library/family hang-out can now comfortably seat around 9 or 10 people! That is awesome!

If you need help getting multiple uses out of one space, whether small or large, feel free to contact me here

Wishing you all a fabulous Friday and a fantastic weekend! :-)
