New Year’s Eve Party Tips

It’s New Year’s Eve everyone! Let the partying begin! :-)

I am in South Florida visiting family and friends that I have not seen in a very long time, and for me, this is just a very awesome way to ring in 2014! I get to see my mom, who I haven’t seen in 3 or so years. My sister Kim and brother Garfield and their children, and some of my closest friends – Stacey, Marsha and Suzette (all dear friends since high school). Whether we just hang out like old times, or party like rockstars, it will be great no matter what.

This is my home away from home for the next few days! Beautiful, isn’t it?

South Florida home

This is the beautiful new home of my best friend, Stacey. But shhh, don’t tell her I posted this picture :-) Let’s just say she is a lot more private than I am.

A lot of you will probably be spending a quiet evening at home with the family, like I usually do. And many of you may be planning parties to ring in the new year. I’ve put together some party tips to help you get your party started!

  • Have a theme for your party. Themes are fun!

399447-1224-18

This can sometimes be a bit cheesy, so be careful what theme you go with and how far you go with it. Think sophisticated, and not necessarily extremely literal with the party theme. Some great theme ideas are: A Vegas theme, 80′s theme, masquerade theme or go simple with a theme that relates to time or new beginnings.

  • Decorate with color

remarkable-colorful-party-accessories-for-new-year-eve-decorations-940x759

Black, white, silver and champagne are always popular colors for decorating for New Year’s Eve, but bringing in color is a great way to show off your personality and definitely being festive

  • Don’t just focus on the tablescapes. Decorate the whole room

Happy-New-Year-decorations

Bring the festive feeling to the rest of the space and not just decorate the table tops. Add tons of balloons, streamers, and confetti to really create a party atmosphere. And it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money.

  • Serve finger foods

ideas-captivating-new-years-eve-party-banquet-with-brass-candelabra-and-white-lily-flowers-bouquet-wonderful-new-years-eve-party-decorations-ideas

It is much easier and less messy to serve light finger foods or hors d’oeuvres at your party. Have something for everyone like vegetarian options, or gluten free options. Make sure the presentation is fabulous and easy to get to.

  • Set up a photo booth

new-years-decorations-enchanted-clock-arch

Of course you want your party to be memorable. What better way than to set up a photo booth or an area for taking photos of all your guests. You can create a collage or a home made website to share pictures with each guest. They will see not just their own pictures, but all the special moments captured at the party.

  • Pay attention to lighting

New year's eve decor

IMG_2453

Create mood and atmosphere with lighting. For example the dance floor could have colorful flashing lights – even a disco ball (how fun would that be?) and the food area could have a beautiful chandelier above the table. Add string lights or put light fixtures on a dimmer for the inevitable kisses at the stroke of midnight :-)

  • Arrange for designated drivers if needed

designated-driver-5

This is the most important component of a successful party. Have a plan in place for guests who may go overboard with drinking (Either designated drivers or a place to crash). If you are hosting a party, then you probably shouldn’t drink too much. Pay attention to your guests as they leave to see if they have been drinking too much and will be getting behind the steering wheel. Use your best judgement and insist if they resist. Better safe than sorry!

Whatever you do tonight, please be safe and have a lot of fun! I am heading out for the day in SHORTS and  a t-shirt. I love South Florida :-)

New Year’s Celebrations In Florida….. Woohoo!!

Are you all Christmased out? I know I am. Man, has it been a crazy week! I had my doubts that I was going to make it  in one piece, as I hit the home stretch of all the shopping, decorating, entertaining, wrapping…..and more shopping. I am now ready to pack away Christmas decorations and start planning for the new year celebrations. How about you?

The kids are happy and really occupied with all their new gadgets, so I think some mommy get-away time is in order. I mean, I totally earned it! Right?  :-)

New-year-2014-beach-520px

Well, lucky for me, the perfect opportunity for a get-away just fell on my lap. I have to jet off to Florida on business for a few days the first week of January, and so I decided to mix a bit of pleasure with business. Yay me!! :-) :-)

I lived in Florida for many years…..10 years to be exact, and so I have a large network of close friends and family there, including my mother, brother and sister. I am pretty sure I will not run out of things to do while I’m there. I definitely see a few parties in my future :-) Maybe even helping my best friend Stacey add some decorative touches to her new home. And the best part, the weather I’m sure will be much better than it is here in Houston! Let the New Year’s celebrations begin! :-)

So incase I am really quiet on the blog next week, please understand that I will have very limited access to the internet and work stuff in general. Besides, I’m sure y’all will be busy partying like it’s 1999! :-)

I will do my best to post as often as possible here on the blog, but I will most likely be updating frequently on Facebook so please join me there.

Now I’m kinda curious about how you will be ringing in the new year? What are the big resolutions if any? Leave me a comment below.

……..And before I go I have one big news to share!!

Merry Christmas From Casa Vilora Interiors

Christmas this year has been very low-key in my household. For one, I have been so busy with work and haven’t had time to fully decorate and immerse myself into my usual Christmas routines. Secondly, my kids are a bit older now and they don’t get as excited over some of the Christmas traditions we are accustomed to doing as a family. And finally, many of you know about my big move in the summer to a much smaller home. Well, I honestly still haven’t quite settled into our new home, many rooms are still pretty bare, and so the usual Christmas decorating bug didn’t hit me quite as hard this year.

Don’t get me wrong, I am still very much in the Christmas spirit, we are just celebrating in a much different way this year.

One major reason for the change in Christmas routines is that my family has gotten a bit bigger this year. I met a new beau a few months ago and we have been dating since August. I am finally meeting his two children for the first time, and so they are spending Christmas at my home. I really wanted them to immediately feel like they are a part of my family, and so I waited to decorate, so they could help pick out a tree, decorate it and put up lights etc. I decided to step back and just let them have fun decorating the tree without worrying about what it will look like afterwards. It is very difficult to do that when you are a Decorator, but I think they did a great job :-)

Here’s what they did:

Christmas Tree and Mantel Decor

Christmas Tree and Mantel Decor

We went from three stockings to six at the mantel. The kids added the live garland with lights (with my help) and they got to pick out all the ornaments they wanted to use. We even went shopping for a family ornament together. One that we’ll use year after year. It is a mini cloche with a bird on a branch…..very cute.

They were so excited about decorating the tree! I went out shopping for last minute gifts and came back to the this:

Stair Rail

Stair Rail

The kids strung lights up the stair rail. They are officially excited to be here! Yay!!! That’s all I really wanted! :-)

Of course both my nativity scenes had to be prominently placed by the fireplace hearth. This one was a gift from my late husband about 12 years ago. The Shepherd broke a few years ago, but I still put it out every year….usually with a bit more decorative pizzazz. But it wouldn’t be Christmas in my home without it.

Nativity Scene

This other nativity scene was also a gift from a friend. In years past, I would have placed it in a bookshelf or a table top, but this year I left it by the fireplace.

We are planning for the next few days leading up to Christmas to do some super fun stuff! Saturday afternoon we went ice-skating (at least the kids did. Sunday we went to church and then for a nice lunch, and tonight we are planning to go look at Christmas lights around the city – that should be fun!

So we are finally ready for Christmas Day…..although there are just a few more gifts to wrap. The kids are all super excited to open their many presents. I am really excited just to see their reactions. The most important gift that I would like to share with them while they are in my care is the true reason for why we celebrate Christmas. The special heavenly gift that was so lovingly given to mankind over 2000 years ago, is still as important and relevant today as it was back then.

6-november-2011-for-unto-us-a-child-is-born3

Ever since my kids were very young, I would read them the Christmas story from The Bible (Matthew 1:18-23) before they open presents on Christmas Morning. I don’t care how old they get, that tradition will always remain and hopefully passed on to the next generation

In the midst of all the hustle and bustle, I did manage to make a short Christmas video for my clients, fans and followers on social media. Take a look, and please give a thumbs up if you liked it.

I will do my best to keep blogging for the rest of the year, but I will be mostly working on mapping out my plans for my business for 2014 and beyond.

What are some of your big plans and goals for 2014?

Apple Holiday Commercial

Has anyone seen the Apple Holiday Commercial?

This one…….

Maybe I’m a big ball of mush, but this commercial brought out the waterworks in me. I mean I literally cried!

It’s not everyday that a one and a half minute long TV commercial tells such a great story of love for family and the precious moments that are truly what matters in life.

It was a blessing watching it, and although I know that Apple is ultimately trying to sell me something, it sure as heck didn’t feel like it.

I have learned a few valuable lessons here:

  • When you have a great product (or service), you don’t have to work hard to sell it
  • Figure out the desires and needs of your customers and make sure your product or service satisfies those needs
  • Show your potential customers the benefits of using your product or service
  • Make sure your prospects don’t feel like you’re always trying to sell them something
  • Don’t forget that behind every purchasing decision (especially a major purchase) is a person……with emotions. Connect with those emotions

……. and most importantly

  • Christmas is not just about the presents we give and get. That is a great part of how we celebrate, and who doesn’t love getting presents, but Christmas is more about home and family and love. The things that truly matter.

I hope you enjoyed this commercial as much as I did – it’s not very often I say that.

Take some time for family, friends and of course the joys of home this Christmas Season. There is no better bonding experience than picking out a tree and decorating it as a family

Often people temporarily remove a big piece of furniture to place their Christmas tree. This is a great way to fill any dead space or empty corner that may result.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Day gives us a great opportunity to relax and reflect on the past year and the year ahead. Many have commited to acknowledging daily through the entire month of November all the things that they are thankful for – family, friends, careers, health, resources, you name it…..we have alot to be thankful for. I came across this quote that expresses my feelings exactly.

imagesCAB4V417

Expressing our gratitude regardless of our circumstances leaves no room for self-pity and selfishness, so let’s practice this discipline of being thankful this Thanksgiving Day and beyond.

Enjoy time with family and friends cooking up a storm, and of course enjoying the delicious turkey dinner. Mine will be spent with my good friend Aimee and my children and mostly relaxing with a glass…or two of organic wine :-)

Feasting backed turkey on holiday table ready to eat

My dinner will look more like this, so no all day cooking for me and the family. I am a mostly-raw vegan and I eat wild salmon occasionally. My side dishes will be baked sweet potatoes, kale salad with fresh organic fruits and for dessert my famous homemade nutty balls treats. Simple ingredients – raw cashews and organic medjool dates with a tiny bit of water mixed in a food processor until mushy and then rolled into balls…..delicious!! Still working out a good name for these sweet treats :-)

Here’s one of my biggest blessings who I will always be thankful for…..My son Joshua. He turns 12 today, November 27. They grow up so fast! :-) We will spend the day doing whatever his little heart desires……within reason of course. I’m pretty sure we will be going to GameStop :-)

Thanksgiving Table Top Ideas

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and it’s time to start planning the menu for the big family feast! Creating a great Thanksgiving table top arrangement goes a long way to making your guests feel welcomed, and setting the scene for a great time together with family and friends.

Here are a few tips to consider for a beautiful Thanksgiving table setting:

  • Select items for the table top based loosely on a theme. Don’t get too literal with a theme, but establishing a loose theme will make for a more cohesive look. Example – A nature inspired theme could include dried branches, florals and real fruits (No fake fruits please :-) )
Source: Rugdots.com

  • Choose a consistent color scheme. Whether you like monochromatic or bold colors, keep colors consistent throughout your tablescape.
Source: Countryliving.com

  •  Try personalized place settings to help welcome your guests and encourage conversations. This is great especially when there are a lot of guests. A large banquet table usually has several small conversations going, so by personalizing place settings, it helps seat people where conversations and socializing will flow easily.

  • Layer the centerpiece with varying heights and textures. Don’t make it so high that guests have a difficult time seeing and communicating with the person across from them. Make it interesting and visually appealing.

Source: stagetecture.com

Source: stagetecture.com

  • Keeping it neutral and simple is sometimes the best thing to do. There’s nothing wrong with allowing the food and family to be the focus instead of the decor
Source: MTDNY.com

Source: MTDNY.com

  •  Allow your personality to shine through. Your home decor in general is a great way for your guests to get to know you. Your Thanksgiving tablescape helps to do the same. Example – if you like peacocks (like I do :-) ) incorporate it somehow without going overboard.
Source: DesignedToTheNines.com

Source: DesignedToTheNines.com

  • Making your tablescape consistent with your style of decor will make it less overwhelming to put together. It is great to seek inspiration outside of what you would normally do, but being true to your decorating style goes a long way, especially with the pressure of preparing dinner. This one is my favorite because it speaks to my current but ever changing design style :-)
Source: eugeniamariaefendy.blogspot.com

Source: eugeniamariaefendy.blogspot.com

  •  Keep the focus on the food and wine, and of course family and friends. Make it so guests will linger long after the food has been  consumed. It helps to have great lighting including candlelight, comfortable chairs and lots of wine :-)
Source: CentsationalGirl.com

Source: CentsationalGirl.com

Creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere will keep your guests lingering and definitely makes your Thanksgiving feast a memorable occasion.

The most important thing is remember to be THANKFUL for everything. This is the season to pause and take a moment to count your blessings and just be thankful for the great things…..and even the challenges in your life. Spending time with family and friends is also the best thing about this time. I love that Thanksgiving seems to bring out the best in people, and the feasts and atmosphere definitely adds to that!
