Spring Has Sprung!

I got up today to a dreary, overcast Monday morning here in Houston. If I didn’t know better, I would have no idea that Spring has sprung.

Well that was until I drove up to my design studio…….

What awaited me was the most beautiful burst of Spring I have seen in a long time……..

My Azalea bushes! They blossomed so beautifully just over the weekend!

Oh how I marvel at God’s beautiful creation!

When I first signed the lease in October of last year to my 1905 Victorian, the landscaping looked like a waste land. One driveway later (which I hired out) and laying 2 pallets of sod (1000sf), and planting 15 azalea bushes and 8 knock-out rose bushes (all by myself), I am pretty proud of my landscape. One day I will share those before and during pictures with you (fire ants attack and all), but for now, I wanted to focus on my beautiful azaleas.

I couldn’t help myself but to pick a few buds and bring them inside…….

These little bud vases are actually salt and pepper shakers that I purchased at the Dollar Store for $1 each. I had planned to spray paint them white, but I actually really like the ribbed effect of the glass. So I’ll leave them as is

TIP: This is a great way to bring some Spring into your home for almost free! Look around your kitchen for small glasses that you no longer use and use them as bud vases for roses, hydrangeas, and of course azaleas.

I especially love white roses in small bud vases….even when they dry out, they are still beautiful and make a great dried arrangement.

Even my weekly planner looks attractive with this arrangement on my desk :-)

And believe me, It is pretty scary when you open it :-)

Look at how well the pink azaleas complement my business cards :-) That totally was a happy accident!

Even my Ikea étagère looks great with a bud.

I will definitely be enjoying the views of my azalea buds all throughout the studio today. Makes for a happy work day! Don’t you think?

Fun Playing In The Dirt

One of my favorite flowers is Hydrangeas. I love the large pom-pom type buds of beautiful white, pink, blue and purple flowers. I haven’t had much success keeping them alive in the past, but that hasn’t stopped me from trying. Every spring I rush out to the garden center to find the most beautiful varieties in bloom. They are one of the easiest fresh flowers to incorpoarte into your decor, and looks great as a dried arrangement as well.

I used to be an avid gardener, spending a lot of time out in the yard getting my hands dirty. These days, with all the responsibilities of being a single mom, running a design business and activities for the kids, I barely have time for much else. Instead of being out in the yard pruning and planting, I have been spending some time reading my gardening magazines, blogs and newsletters to get some inspiration for gardening at the new home in a few weeks. I have always found myself drawn to the wild, unkept yet orderly look, with lots of flower beds and vegetable patches. I also enjoy unexpected, unique and whimsical touches that are sure to put a smile on your face. Here are some cute little ideas that I’ve collected and will be using one or two in my own garden.

How cute is this idea!  It would look great as a grouping!

I don’t think I will have the space for this one, but it is such a great use for something that would have otherwise end up in the landfill

I’ll definitely be trying this one with a bunch of old birdcages I have in my garden shed. This one would look great in a grouping of three in varying heights :-)

I’m sure there are thousands more of these ideas out there, but you get the idea :-)

I will certainly be trying a few of these, in moderation. Hopefully you are inspired to go forth and get your hands dirty!
