Pick Me Oprah Winfrey!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately , you know that Oprah Winfrey is completely redecorating her Santa Barbara Home! Many have bought the chance to jump on Oprah’s sofa, with the recent auction of her possessions – light fixtures, fine art, personal memorabilia and furniture. Oprah herself was even present at the auction and the proceeds all went to one of her many charity organizations.

The current interior was designed by the late Decorator, Anthony P. Browne and was done in a very English Country style that she now realizes is no longer who she is. It was more about impressing people and living up to what others expected of her. In her own words “I started to notice little things, like the fact that my living room wasn’t designed for living”. She admits there was really no place to put her feet up, always afraid that the dogs would slobber on the silk slipcovers, and although very impressive to her guests, they would be perched on the edge of the opulent sofa for fear of getting fingerprints on it. You can read the full article from O magazine here.

Oprah’s Santa Barbara Home

Where you live should reflect who you really are, and for that reason, Oprah now wants to create a home that’s all her own. Those are definitely words I encourage my clients to live by in my own decorating practice.

So what would I do for Oprah if she called on me to redecorate her Santa Barabara home?

She has clearly gone through many decorating styles and trends, from contemporary to English country and many others in between. So what would I do differently?

As a busy head of an empire, I would expect that she would want something homey, cozy and comfortable to come home to. I would go with a “New Traditional Style” but slightly more casual and relaxed. This way she could even repurpose, refresh and reuse some of her older, favorite pieces (she may be on a budget, you never know :-) ). I would create for her a home with very muted, soothing, cool grayed tones, classic furniture pieces that are not so precious that she is afraid to use them. Seating that are comfortable and invites you to sit and relax, or curl up with a great book. Warm wood floors and beautiful area rugs that are comfortable underfoot. I would definitely keep her pets in mind, by choosing fabrics that are very pet friendly and easy to use, so they can slobber all they want. A very harmonious home that’s light and airy and flows very well from room to room.

These are some color palettes from Design Seeds that I would choose for my good friend Oprah :-)

Spa like bathroomNotice the warm, dark wood floors, the beautiful texture of the grasscloth wallpaper, and that awesome vintage inspired tub! I think these would definitely appeal to her senses.

I would definitely consider some elements of these rooms found from various sources on the internet for Oprah’s makeover.

My Inspiring Celebrity Encounters

As a designer, I jump at the chance to check out new and innovative products, spot new and exciting design trends, and glean knowledge and inspiration from my peers and other designers whom I admire. Every chance I get, I attend design panel discussions, and speaking events – especially when the designers are well known nationally and even globally. What these designers usually have in common is that they are a brand, with several projects and products in their portfolio. Branding has become the goal that most designers have set for themselves. Getting published in a shelter magazine is usually the first step, followed by product design (furniture, upholstery, lighting, textiles and accessories). Since this is my ultimate goal, I seek every opportunity to meet these designers in person, ask questions of them, or just a brief chat to pick their brains a bit.

As I looked through old photos, I realized just how many of these designers I have actually met and what kept ringing in my head is “TIME TO TAKE ACTION”.

Action for me will be one step at a time. After all, no one becomes a global brand overnight. My first action step is hiring a great photographer to take photos of my completed projects. You simply cannot get published without great photographs. Publishers and editors are looking for photos of rooms with the wow factor! I am so guilty of finishing a project, the room is gorgeous, the client is happy and I’m either too tired to take proper photos, or I forgot to take my camera along. It is alot more difficult to go back to take photos (sometimes I do), but it’s better done right at installation. So this is what I’ll be working on in the next few weeks and hopefully get some new projects that will give me the creative freedom I need to get world-class photos.

I thought I’d share some of these “celebrity encounter” photos, to show where some of my inspiration comes from. They are all taken with an iPhone, so again, not great photos, but you get the point :-)

Here I am with John Robshaw who is very well known in the design world for his beautiful, globally inspired textiles. He is a very well published designer and author and has a fabulous fabric line with Duralee Fabrics…and he is very dreamy :-)

So you can see that I have big shoes to fill. Being a successful designer in today’s market means that you have to market yourself as a brand. The best advice I got from these wonderful designers is to focus on the niche that I love and enjoy more than anything else, have a genuine desire to share it with the world, and the rest will follow. For me, that is textiles. I just love fabrics with a wonderful hand, beautiful patterns and have visual appeal. The goal is to design and develop a collection inspired by my Caribbean heritage, some Florida influences (lived there for many years) and of course Texas chic!

Other designers that I would love to meet are Candice Olsen, Tobi Fairley, Alexa Hampton and Jonathan Adler. Soon I hope :-)
