Wellness Wednesday: doTERRA And ADHD

doterra essential oils

Last Wednesday I shared a little bit about my new role as a Wellness Advocate for doTERRA Essential Oils, and why I decided to pursue this new venture. You can read it here incase you missed it.

There are a few different reasons why I decided to become a Wellness Advocate for doTERRA.

  • To supplement my income. Although doTERRA is a fairly young company, we are growing rapidly. The integrity and leadership of the founders and the integrity of the products drew me to finding out more about making it a business. doTERRA is a product driven company – we are all about wellness and wholeness, and my personal experience so far has been remarkable. doTERRA is all about making a difference in people’s lives. Watch this brief video to see what this couple’s experience has been

  • I was looking for natural and holistic alternatives to treating illnesses in my family. I am a big believer that our bodies were designed by God to heal themselves providing we put the right things in and on our bodies. I changed my diet dramatically from eating processed foods and fast foods, to an almost raw vegan lifestyle, where I make conscious choices about what I ingest. I am trying to reverse some of the damage that I did to my body all these years of drinking sodas and over-indulging in empty calories. I witnessed my husband’s untimely death 10 years ago to cancer, and now realizing that the “treatments” (chemo and radiation) were ultimately to blame. I am not suggesting that people no longer follow their doctors’ advice for treatments, but if I could go back in time, I don’t think we would have chosen mainstream treatments.
  • I was looking for natural alternatives to the toxic cleaning supplies and personal care products  that I have used in the past
  • And finally, my sons ADHD tendencies, and that’s what I will focus on in today’s post

I call them ADHD tendencies, because he has not been officially diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. In fact, my son isn’t even hyper, he has a problem staying focused, especially in school. His imagination is always racing…..he can dream up what I imagine one day will become major Hollywood productions, and he just struggles in school.

This goes back to first grade when he wasn’t reading on the same level as his classmates. Of course as a mom, I felt like I had failed my child. It is not because I wasn’t reading with him at home…..he reads very well out loud. He knew all the words and read at a good verbal pace. It was the comprehension part that they were worried about. We would talk about the stories and what they meant, and sometimes he would get them and sometimes not. I brought him in for extra lessons and worked with the teachers and counselors to move a bit slower with him, but ultimately we decided to keep him back in first grade.

Each school year we would have the same issues, and as he got older, now a 5th grader, much more was expected of him. He even got to the point where he was so frustrated that he seemed to have given up. Homework wasn’t getting done unless I supervised, homework left at school or at home, classwork not completed. A million parent/teacher conferences later and we came up with a brilliant game plan to really hold him accountable. He goes in early mornings before school for extra tutoring three days a week and his teacher and I have a system to cross check homework to make sure they got home, got done, and got back to school……The system works, but it still has its flaws, the major one being, both his teacher and I having to micro-manage him. Try doing that consistently as a single mompreneur :-(

In the midst of all of this, I took him in to see his doctor to figure out how best we can help him. This was a few years ago (maybe when he was in 3rd grade) when ADHD was such a “trend” they would even diagnose an active puppy with it. Seriously! All of a sudden a kid with an active and healthy imagination had some horrible disease that required medicine. His “diagnosis” was based on a questionnaire that both his teacher and I completed. Some of the questions were surprisingly more about our economic status than anything else…..I mean what does my level of education have to do with ADHD? I got another one of those questionnaires about a week ago, just before the state tests and I said NO THANKS! If he fails he fails. All I ask him to do his try his very best. That is good enough for me. I am just a bit over the “box” that they have put my son in all these years. I will rant about that in a future post :-(

After reviewing the questionnaire, my son’s doctor decided to write us a prescription….I cannot remember for what medicine it was, because I flat out refused. I asked if his decision to write this prescription was based solely on the questionnaire and he said yes. I was amazed by that. I decided to change some routines and see if that helped. some did, some didn’t. Consistency has been our biggest challenge.

Over the past year, I have changed his diet to much more healthy foods, but I know that some cheating happens at the school cafeteria. I have gotten him involved in sports, which seems to help his focus and discipline quite a bit. I have limited his video game and TV watching time and finally I have started to use doTERRA just about a week and a half ago as a treatment for him.

Our current doTERRA protocol

After reading this blog post  on My Essential Oil Experiment blog by a fellow doTERRA Wellness Advocate, whose daughter struggles with ADHD and Aspergers, I decided to really focus on this as a treatment alternative. She shared her protocol with her readers and how much the oils were helping her daughter.

These are all the oils she uses. I don’t have them all yet, but I decided to start with what I have. You can click here to read her exact system, but I will share what I have been doing so far with my son based on her system

Every night before bed and in the some mornings I place the a drop of the following oils on each of his big toes: Vetiver, Geranium, Frankincense. Why the big toe? Because in reflexology all the nerve points of the brain are connected to the big toe. All these oils are related to brain health.

  • Vetiver (is a thick oil and should be diluted 3 to 1 with fractionated coconut oil. Also available from doTERRA (3 drops of Vetiver to 1 drop of fractionated coconut oil) – Treats ADHD/ADD
  • Geranium – Treats agitation environmental stress
  • Frankincense – Treats imbalance, brain injury, memory, confusion, mental fatigue

I then rub one drop of Balance on his left ankle to heel area. Why there? In reflexology the male hormones are located there

  • Balance – anxiety, brain integration, confusion, convulsions, depression, energy, fear, hyperactivity, mood swings

I then rub a drop of Lemon on the inside of his wrist, and one drop of Peppermint and In-Tune up his spine to his neck

  • Lemon – Depression, Anxiety, Brain Injury, Exhaustion, Physical Energy, Purification, Relaxation, Stress, Uplifting
  • Peppermint – alertness, antioxidant, autism, fatigue, brain injury, chronic fatigue
  • In-Tune – ADD/ADHD, anxiety, calming, clarity, concentration, focus, hyperactivity, stress

I place a drop of Lavender under his nose and then rub a drop on his back and give him a mini massage

  • Lavender – Calming and relaxing

Here is some information about Reflexology that you might find helpful. Click here

How has my protocol worked so far?

It has only been a week and about 2 days since I started and I have seen improvements in my son. In the past, he would pick TV time or playing a video game and I caught him reading a few times this week. He rarely reads on his own unless I ask him to.

I also noticed that he seems to be very well rested in the mornings like he got a good night’s sleep.

It has created some great mommy and son bonding time. Josh is now 12 and the tucking in at night ritual had started to get phased out. Now he looks forward to his massages and oil treatments at night. He even brings me the basket of oils. We talk about his day in more depth while I am rubbing his oils on and we laugh a lot (he is very ticklish :-) )

So far it is too soon to tell if he has improved at school, especially since last week was state testing and no homework was given, but I wouldn’t be surprised with his new attitude.

I am so grateful for these amazing oils that are powerful therapeutic grade and are proven to work.

  1. Wow! I’ve been hearing so much about DoTerra lately and all the wonderful benefits.. and even things it can possibly cure… even just simply headaches all the way to what you’re experiencing. Pretty incredible!

  2. We use a lot of Essential oils for health treatments. I am excited to begin using them with my daughter and her challenges as soon as her behavior and psychological testing is complete so we know what she has. Then I can begin using the oils. She is being tested for a lot of different things; but one being ADD; as she has attention issues. but no hyperactivity. -Amber E.

  3. Wow, you gave me a lot to think about today. My six year old has been displaying possible ADHD/ADD symptoms for a while and I had him tested and was told he was just immature. It’s so hard for him to sit still and focus, though.

  4. I hope the oils do just what you’re hoping they will. I love that you’re getting some more tuck-in time, I know that time goes by way too quickly. :)

  5. I love dōTERRA! I’m so grateful for these amazing and powerful oils! I’m going to try your protocol with one of my grandsons… I was waiting to hear of your thoughts on this protocol! Thank you!

  6. This is really interesting. I don’t know much about using essential oils for treatments but I would love to learn more. DoTerra sound wonderful and is definitely something worth looking into .

    • I wasn’t a fan of MLM either. In fact I hated the concept until I discovered what a great company doTERRA is. The compensation structure is the best I’ve seen and the leadership is great. It certainly isn’t for everybody as a business but the products are amazing

  7. My brother is/was ADHD and Dyslexic, among other troubles, and he chose to take medicine when he was little. It helped a TON. Then, at age 14, he decided he wanted to try to go without, and since he had the training on the medicine, he knew how to counteract his tendencies. I believe in better living through chemistry.

  8. They sound like great products! I will have to check them out for my daughter. She has ASD and I would love to see if they help her. I don’t ever want to put her on meds.

  9. I’m still not sold on the ADD and ADHD thing, it really does seem like it came out of nowhere! Seriously! If this “illness” was known back in the days I was in school I would have been “diagnosed” for sure. I had a very active imagination. I wouldn’t want to give my son any sort of medications like that, It’s wonderful that there are safe and natural alternative!

  10. Veronica, I just love that you are taking your son’s health seriously and not just putting him on meds. I know there is a time and place for that…but I also know you can do most things naturally. Great for you about changing his diet and now using the essential oils!

  11. So much pressure is put on the kids these days and if parents don’t act their child will fall behind and fail. I don’t see anyway around this and hope this works for you.

  12. It seems like this is a great alternative that is showing results! Thank you for sharing this, I was not aware that this product was used in these cases. Very interesting!

  13. It takes great courage to find alternatives for your son and do all that you are. I hope that these oils will help you both on your journey. I have heard very positive things about essential oils.

  14. So glad that you found a healthy alternative for your son. I use essential oils as well not only for myself but for my 2 little dogs. There is so much that oils can do. Thanks for sharing your story.

  15. Very interesting information. I had not heard of this company but I plan on spending some time and checking them out. I haven’t really tried essential oils yet but I would like this and maybe this will motivate me to do so.

    • You should definitely give it a try Pam. Let me know if I can point you in the right direction. My doTERRA Website has some great information about the oils.

    • Yes Pam. They are powerful therapeutic grade oils. The best there is. I’d love to help you get started with them. Please let me know if I can be of any help

  16. I have heard so much about essential oils and I am sure they are going to be a great asset for the ADHD tendencies. I am beginning to study about them with a book I just purchased and am signing up to take a class locally at a holistic health center.

  17. I ditched all of my prescribed medicines and went to a completely natural way of healing myself. So far, it seems to be working very well. I also believe that our bodies were made to self heal. I don’t want to keep consuming crap just because big pharma says it’s good for me.

  18. using more holistic things has been something that I try to do whenever possible. I have been able to keep cholesterol under control with the more holistic things. Thanks for the information.

  19. With so many advertisement and businesses going on out there, sometimes, it gets really difficult to know which of the brands genuinely are concerned of your health and those that only care about money making. I would say that medications can cure one symptom but can cause another symptom. It gets you nowhere. Anyway, I’m happy that you take your son’s health seriously. There are many things that we can cure in the natural way.

    • Thank you Denise. I will definitely check out your book. You can purchase the oils through my doTERRA website. The most popular ones are peppermint, lemon, lavender, geranium. Please let me know if you need any help

  20. I think it’s really great that you are taking the initiative to try alternate methods with your son if you feel medication isn’t a good fit. Kudos to you for putting in the effort and giving your son what’s best! I hope you see great results :)

    • This is very true! DoTERRA essential oils are powerful therapeutic grade oils. doTERRA is great for treating anything from headaches to more complicated illnesses. It works with our body’s natural ability to heal itself. Each person’s body accepts the oils differently but they do work with no side effects!

    • I will be posting each Wednesday on this topic. You can subscribe to my feed to make sure you don’t miss these updates. Best wishes Lisa and I hope you will consider doTERRA

  21. So I’ve heard about these oils but I had no idea that they had an ADHD/Aspergers regiment. I’m sold! I have to try this with my daughter!!

    • Thanks Erica. These oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade so they work with your body’s natural defenses against illnesses. They work wonderfully! You can join as a preferred member for $35 and receive all your oils at 25% off retail. Or you can join as a Wellness Advocate. I recommend the family physician kit for $150 which contains several samples of the oils and a free oil is included. Please let me know if you need help. Go to my doTERRA website to get started or feel free to email me http://www.mydoterra.com/veronicasolomon

    • That’s true Marni! It’s the kick back that they get from big pharma that motivates them in a lot of situations and not necessarily what’s best for the patient. These drugs have way too many side effects!

  22. Okay, I think I’m seriously out of the loop here! I haven’t heard of doTERRA before and I had no idea that essential oils could do so much. I’m think I’m going to have to do a bit of research now. I’m all about healing without medication.

  23. Thank you so much for sharing your story in this post. I am so glad that you are seeing positive results. And I agree with you – our bodies are amazing self caring machines. I do think that sometimes we get in the way by trying to ‘fix’ every little thing with outside influences, rather than letting our bodies do what they do naturally.

  24. I just heard about DoTerra recently. I am going to start reading more about essential oils and the health benefits. Thanks for sharing. :)

  25. Wow… the doctor just gave prescription just like that based from the questionnaire. I think it’s ok that you still supervise your son in helping his school homework. He’s still young. Don’t be afraid that he gets attached to you. I’m sure you will manage how to guide him in managing his independence and controlling his behavior. Only us Moms know what’s best for our kids and we need to bond with them everyday.

  26. Wow, unfortunately I’m not very surprised about the issue with the doctor. Sad but not surprised. I’m glad you put your foot down to follow you’re own motherly instinct to try natural ways to help your son. Good for you!

    • Thanks Amber! The lemon is so fresh. It can be used for cleaning and to add flavor to foods and water. It’s one of the more popular oils. I can help you order if you like

  27. It’s so great how there are more and more alternative for everything. It’s great too that no matter how many meds we invent, we always seem to go back to nature in the end.

    • That’s so true! Mainstream meds never seem to cure. They treat symptoms with many side effects, that’s why people seek out natural holistic alternatives

  28. Thank you for sharing your story of seeking wellness help. I’m sorry to hear about the loss of your husband. That must have been a very difficult time for you and your son. I’ve been involved with nutrition and the wellness industry since 1985. It has been a most interesting journey which has caused me to develop quite a passion for sharing with others about the importance of nutrition and health. I’m familiar with DoTerra because my sister-in-law is a DoTerra distributor. She loves the oils. I’ve used some along with my NeoLife Supplements. She does still prefer the NeoLife Supplements. Right now NeoLife is one of the key reasons my 93 1/2 year old mother has been able to survive her bout with stage 4 lung cancer. Even though she has had chemo, it has not made her ill because of being on the NeoLife supplements. I wish you and your son complete wellness as you travel your road. Thank you again for sharing.

    • Thanks for your words of encouragement Pat. I have enjoyed reading your blog posts and find value in your experience. I wish you and your mom all the best.

  29. Loved seeing your open, straightforward explanation of why you added doTERRA to your area of activity, Veronica. By being this open, you’ll not only attract customers, but you won’t turn off others who maybe aren’t customers now … or ever. They’ll stick around because they like you … and the information you’re sharing!

    • Thanks Sharon, I felt it was best to share my own experience with using doTERRA. I wanted this to be a great exchange of experiences and questions and answers. My hope is that my post will help someone else with a similar journey to mine
