Recently I received a call from a young lady looking to have some curtains done for her 4 year old son’s bedroom. She was a referral from a current client, so I was excited to meet with her to discuss her needs.
After meeting with her and taking measurements of the small window, I came up with a few options that would be fitting for the window. The window already had blinds, and privacy was not an issue, so we talked about doing simple drapery panels
Her son loves rocket ships and anything astronaut related. She already had a few rocket ship patterned fabrics that she purchased to make a custom quilt. The quilt is still being made by an Etsy shop owner, but based on the fabrics she showed me, I knew it would be very busy. This means that the window treatment had to be fairly simple to balance things out.
I like to provide my clients with as many visual aids as possible to help them see how the finished products will look. They are obviously not 100% realistic but are for illustration purposes. The illustrations are drawn to scale, the fabric patterns pictured on the sketches are not to scale.
Here are four options that I will be presenting
Option 1
In this first option I am presenting a combination of a pair of color blocked panels with grommet tops and a non-functional roman shade underneath. The color blocked panels are three different colors (blue, yellow and white) in cotton duck. The colors are pulled from all the other fabrics in the room. The drapery panels will be lined with blackout lining. The non-functional roman shade is a rocket ship patterned cotton fabric with a solid banding at the bottom in the blue fabric. Non-functional simply means that the shade is more of a fixed valance and not meant to pull down to close. This is a less expensive option if you like the look of roman shades, and don’t need the function of them.
Option 2
The second option is the same as option 1 but without the roman shade. This is the least expensive option of the four.
Option 3
In the third option, I am also recommending a color block grommet top panels done slightly different from options 1 and 2. Color blocked drapery panels are perfect for this room. Since the bedding will be very busy, the drapery needs to be simple. Solid color panels would be too simple and plain. Color blocked panels are still very simple but provides interest and a more custom touch.
In this option I am recommending a solid blue cotton duck fabric for the bottom two-thirds, and the top being the rocket ship patterned fabric. There is a red cotton banding in the center separating the two fabrics.
Option 4
In this last option, I am also recommending grommet top panels. This time they are a solid red cotton duck with a 4″ banding of the rocket ship fabric as the leading edge and hem of each panel.
Any one of these options will work great with the room, so it will boil down to the difference in cost for my client I’m sure.
I am choosing grommet tops over using rings since grommets have a more casual look and a bit more contemporary and masculine.
The hardware will be a brushed nickel finish.
I am excited to see which one she chooses, and of course the finished drapery!
We are also doing some floor cushions, shams and pillows for this project, as well as recommending paint colors for the wall and bed frame.
Here are a couple examples of color block panels that I have done in the past, to give you a visual idea.
This was a gameroom that I completed a few months ago using orange, blue and white linen fabrics. The pillows were also custom made.
This was a pair of gray and white linen fabrics in a clients study (chairs hadn’t arrived yet)
Now that you’ve seen all four options, which would you choose?
Thanks for stopping by
Having a terrific Thursday!
Be Inspired!
I like color blocks. My house is kind of beachy/countryish, so I am not sure they would work in my house, but I like the look of them.
They all look great but for the colors in my home I would get the white and gray
I just bought some gromet topped pannels for my living room. Not sure if I am going to like them or not, but I have the option to return them. Great ideas you have.
Thanks Terri.
Love this idea! Super cute!
I would love the third one. your work is so amazingly great!!
Thanks Richard!
Well I had panels in my toddlers room and he pulled them down during naptime. So he is currently window-treatment less!!! Not sure what to do now since he is going through his terrible two phase and pulling everything off the walls and windows
I love long, sweeping drapes- I think they add such a comforting, yet elegant touch to a room.
I am getting ready to make some drapes for my youngest sons room, I love the last one but we are restricted by the weight of the drapes. We have to use those spring tension rods to hold them up. I need to cover the blinds though, blinds are good but drapes make it cozy. Hopefully I can duplicate the look without the weight so we can get them up soon.
You might want to make them unlined or with a light cotton sateen lining. There are end cap brackets you can use with a fixed wooden rod instead of the tension rod. That way even if the draperies are heavy they will be fine. Let me know if I can point you in the right direction with that
You’ve really inspired me! I love these color block panels! I need to brighten up my bedroom in an interesting way- its so dark and drab in there it’s depressing. Hunter green walls, brown curtains. Blah. So, I’m planning to brighten it up but somehow need a balance to avoid making it TOO bright so that we aren’t woken up with the sun every morning.
I’m glad you found done inspiration here Erica. Sounds like the walls could use a new fresh coat of paint. Have fun redecorating!
I meant “found some inspiration” not “found done inspiration” haha! Autocorrect I tell ya!
I would have a hard time choosing. I like all of the options that you have presented. Drapes really can set the tone for a room. You have inspired me to think about choosing new ones for my kid’s room.
As always, GREAT ideas. I love drapery and think it really makes a room look homey.
I like option 3 for the boy’s room! Super cute!
I love these color block patterns! I especially like option number three, I think it is very cute! You have great ideas as usual!
I liked option 3, and it was the least expensive – which is great because kids grow and the room will probably need redecorating in a few years!
We have color block valances in my son’s room that have been there since he was born. They still look good though.
I am going to go with option four. I thing that style would be best for my toddlers room.
Color block! Awesome! I’m in the process of redoing my almost 5-year old son’s room, a color block drape would be perfect!
I like the Roman shade but I also really like option 3! You’re just so talented and good at what you do!!! Wonderful!
I really like the colorblock panels! It’s really cute and stylish.
I always prefer simple designs with an odd number of colors/shades. I won’t decorate a room with less than 3 colors and I like the drapes with the simple 3 color design you posted. I think those would be my first choice.
What some lovely ideas – I adore the idea of two different colours, I wouldn’t have thought of it myself but it looks lovely x
I like having so many options and I also like that so much is considered for each one. It’s not one size fits all.
I like the 3rd recommendation maybe because the color is really nice.
You need tons of options for windows, oy. We are picking stuff out right onw, it’s almost too much to handle
What a great idea. I always have a hard time with drapes.
I love the red! You have several great options to select from:) I guess for a toddler I would pick one with a pattern:)
I like all of these options. I really like the block colors. These would be really cute in a toddler’s room.
These options would look so great in my granddaughters new room in the how they just moved into. I will pass this along to my daughter.
my first choice would be the third option, followed closely by the first option.
I really love the color blocks. It’s such a fun look!
omg! I love the boys theme on those kids bedroom drape and curtains
My boys love spaceships. Thank you for the idea
These are pretty nice curtains.Light and fun for children and able to transition to those tween/teen years if necessary.
Thank you all for your great comments and wonderful input.
