A Colorful Kids’ Playroom

Today I want to share with you a recently completed playroom project for one of my very favorite clients.

I have been working with the Goldstein’s now for about 4 years on several different projects in their home.

We started out years ago with their family room and sunroom, and over the years have completed their dining room, sitting room, library, master bedroom and toddler bedroom.

Our most recent project is the kids’ playroom.

The Goldstein’s are a wonderful blended family of 10 with 5 children still living at home; ages 14 years old to 3 months old. They wanted a space that was all about the kids, that would be fun, safe, functional and suitable for all their ages – teenager to infant.

The large game room on the second level was the obvious choice to transform into a fun kids’ playroom.

We were starting from scratch with this room – All new paint, furniture, storage, art and accessories. The only keepers were the existing red patterned custom drapery panels and large TV and equipment. The red draperies were the inspiration for the room’s color palette.

The Plan

Play Room Floor Plan Casa Vilora Interiors
This is the space plan for our playroom.

We brought in a sectional from West Elm that we scored a great deal on, A large wall unit from Ikea with plenty of storage and room for the large TV and equipment, two swivel chairs also from Ikea, a kid’s play table and chairs from Land of Nod, an end table from Ikea, and a custom coffee table that I designed and had made by my carpenter. The coffee table had to be large enough to accommodate a train set.

The Before

Ready for it?

The room was very cluttered with toys everywhere due to the lack of storage. Brace yourselves :-)

The Color Palette

The color inspiration came from the existing  red custom drapery panels that they had made about five years ago. The draperies were still quite beautiful and in very good condition. I had my seamstress modify them slightly so they would look a bit fuller. I decided to go with really saturated colors – leaning towards primary colors in green, yellow, red and blue. I also brought in a bit of black and white to help balance out all the color in the room. The wall color is also a neutral pale gray green (Sherwin Williams Useful Gray). I kept the sectional and wall unit neutral as well, since they are the two largest pieces in the room.

The Finished Play Room

Here is the new space……

As you can see, the pillows played a major role in anchoring our color scheme. I love the fun green swivel chairs and the yellow coffee table.

The Piece de Resistance

Every room needs art to make it complete. My clients love original art. In fact we only use original art in their home. What better way to add a unique and personal touch than having the kiddos paint the art for the room using acrylic paints in the room’s color scheme. I then selected six, and framed them in picture frames from Ikea. I think my little Picassos did an amazing job! Don’t you? :-)

There it is!

The install went well and my clients (including the kiddos) love the room and are very happy with it! That makes me happy :-)

Could you handle this much color in a room? Leave me a comment below

Thanks for checking out my latest project. I will be sure to share the professional photos soon

Have a terrific Tuesday!

Be Inspired!

  1. You’re an amazing decorator. I loved doing this to my son’s room when he was little and let me:=) Question….do you have to see a room to do a layout like you do? I am struggling with a new arrangement, but don’t live close enough for you to come see and was wondering if dimensions and walls, windows if you could provide that service?

  2. I love when clients come back for other jobs, that means you did a great job in the first place – it is the highest compliment in my book. I love the transformation of the playroom. I think I will use your idea for the train table in my sons room. He had one that was damaged in the move across the country and I like that option better than the traditional tables.

    • I agree about repeat business being the highest compliment. In fact, these clients have referred me to several other clients. I love working with them! Let me know if you need dimensions or any details on the cocktail table

  3. I chuckled a little because if that’s what you call a playroom down your way, then you should see what we all call playrooms up here in New England. What you have there is a family room – a play room is filled with toys and kids furniture, not couches and desks ;)

    • Lol. Well it is primarily a playroom but suitable for mom and dad as well. There is tons of storage in this room. A closet full of toys and games, the wall unit full of video games and movies, the cocktail table full of books and small items and tons of storage bins that are not shown in the pictures

  4. I like how it’s a room for the kids, but it isn’t so overwhelmingly about the kids. Adults can sit in there and feel relaxed too! Good job on the room makeover!

  5. Love the room and the colours from the pillows. The kids art is such a great touch. I can see how it won’t take much in the future to change it up, new art on the wall, new pillows, etc.

    Beautiful.

  6. It looks more like a family room, a comfy place everyone can gather. Love that you use Ikea and oher sources. These are not my color choices and I prefer fewer colors in a room, but you decorated for your client . They were pleased and have been in the past. Returning customer is the best compliment you can get.

  7. Oh wow, I love , love, love the color. I especially love those green chairs. I love how the color pops in this room. You really have a nice style.

  8. Wow, what a huge difference!! I love seeing before and after pictures. The playroom looks so much more bright and cheery.

  9. You did a fantastic job! I think that you did great! I love everything about the room. I think my favorite thing is the kids’ artwork in the room. I think that everything fits perfectly.

  10. Beyond the whole new energy you gave to the space, Veronica, what was great was that you were able to obtain it with a smart balance of IKEA pieces and special custom touches. And the framed kid-art? Genius! Congratulations on a terrific reinvention of a room!

  11. Wow, you did a fantastic job on this playroom! I would love to do a room similar to this for our daughter!
